About Macy

Macy Yu is a dancer, choreographer, and educator with a strong foundation in both competitive and contemporary dance training. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Dance with a minor in Education from Saint Mary's College of California in 2024 and is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts in Dance at the same institution, with an expected graduation in 2026. Macy brings a thoughtful, student-centered approach to teaching, combining clear technical instruction with somatic awareness and expressive intention. Her experience choreographing for soloists and teams, alongside her academic training, allows her to support dancers in developing technique, confidence, and artistry in a supportive and encouraging environment.

About the lesson

Lesson Planning
My lesson plans are structured yet adaptable, designed to meet each student where they are while supporting steady growth. I begin by identifying the student’s goals—whether technical improvement, audition preparation, confidence-building, or choreography support—and tailor each session accordingly.
A typical lesson includes:
A focused warm-up to prepare the body safely and intentionally
Technique-based exercises that address alignment, strength, flexibility, and coordination
Application of technique through phrases, choreography, or improvisation
Time for reflection, questions, and goal-setting
I plan lessons with clear objectives but remain flexible, allowing the student’s needs, energy, and progress to guide the pacing of each session.

Teaching Methods & Techniques
My teaching approach centers on clarity, encouragement, and embodied understanding. I prioritize helping students understand why they are doing something, not just how. I use a combination of:
Verbal cues and imagery
Demonstration and physical awareness prompts
Guided corrections that emphasize safety and sustainability
Positive reinforcement to build confidence and trust
I draw from my background in contemporary dance, competitive training, and somatic practices to support students in developing both technical skill and body awareness. I encourage curiosity, musicality, and expressive intention while maintaining strong technical foundations.
I also believe in creating a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and taking creative risks.
