About Robert

I'm a passionate, positive, and hardworking individual who thrives when I'm working one to one with others. I have an enthusiasm for the things I'm doing and the people I teach and nothing is more rewarding than seeing someone I've worked with improve. My goal is to cultivate a love for the sciences in my students the same way I have been able to do for myself, how I'll do it? I will be using my strong communication skills to uncover the best way for you to learn and hand design your lessons accordingly, my contagious enthusiasm for science to inspire further exploration and genuine interest in what you learn, and my considerable experience with math, chemistry, and physics to ensure that you develop a strong understanding of the big picture of these amazing sciences. About the lesson

My perspective:
The best way to learn a subject is to fall in love with it, and that's what I will be helping you to do! I think a lot of the time when people are trying to pick up a difficult concept, it can be hard to see the bigger picture and put so many pieces of information into one cohesive whole. I aim to make the sciences approachable and familiar for my student, and truly enhance their learning experience for the present and future.

My approach:
My approach to learning has always been to intimately understand the intuitive connections that tie a subject together, as opposed to just trying to memorize as much material as possible. This approach is like a Swiss army knife: you will be able to tackle just about ANYTHING a subject can throw at you by using your logic and understanding of the governing principles at play. I'll help you construct a flexible and transferable style of learning that you can bring to whatever you might find yourself doing in the future!

Basic Lesson plan:
A typical lesson plan will follow a four step process:
(1) Introduction of a new concept: This might follow a traditional outline described by a textbook or a professor, at this stage, necessary equations and mathematical fundamentals to address some scenario are introduced.
(2) Practice questions: Just because one has seen an equation doesn't mean that it makes much sense. Problems will be designed to give the student a feel for the machinery of an equation/concept, and to discover the nuance that might not be necessarily obvious from the first impression of the concept.
(3) Review and Recap: During this portion of the lesson, we'll take the time to look back and UNDERSTAND what we've just done, that is, we'll be looking past the SPECIFICS of the problem so that we might cement our understand the GENERALITY of the concept.
(4) Construction of the big picture: The goal of this section is to help incorporate the concepts we learn into a larger body of interconnected ideas which will allow us to tackle more complex problems with confidence rather than fear. A subject (ie. Calculus, Algebra, Geometry) is a collection of tools which are designed to help us engage with and explore new and unfamiliar situations. It would therefore be useful to understand what tools we have and what they are used for, no?

Extras:
Aside from the typical lesson plan, I will always be sure to maintain clear communication with my student, asking them how THEY think about a concept. As I get a better sense for how my student thinks, I'll make adjustments to their teaching so that the experience is as fruitful and fun as possible, I'll give constructive feedback on where they perform well, as well as places of focus for improvement.

Who my lessons are geared towards:
My lessons are will suited for anyone taking STEM classes in K-12th grade, as well as for intro level undergraduate students taking chemistry, math, or physics. Remember, learning is a two way street, I'm just as excited to learn from my student as I am to teach them, thank you so much for reading!!
