About Mairi
I have been playing the viola since I was 9 years old, studying with Joanna Petrie and then Katherine Wren, and have a wide array of orchestral, chamber and solo performance experience. My orchestral experience began in Edinburgh Youth Orchestra in 2017, which led on to me being appointed the viola section leader the following year. The same year, I successfully auditioned for the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, being sat in the viola no.3 position for their 2018 orchestra; the following year, I was appointed principal of the section. I began my further education studies at the University of Aberdeen, studying under Dr Laurie Rominger, graduating with a First-Class Honours in 2023. Since 2023, I have been studying a MMus Orchestral Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music, studying under Dorothea Vogel and Nancy Johnson, with additional lessons from Becky Jones and Dunia Ershova, and will be graduating in July 2025. I have worked with many internationally recognised conductors, such as Jac van Steen, Martyn Brabbins, Thomas Søndergård, Catherine Larsen-Maguire and Tomáš Hanus, and performed in concerts with Welsh National Opera and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
