About Katia

Hi there! My name is Katia, and I’m a recent graduate from UC San Diego with a degree in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences and a minor in Mathematics. Over the years, I’ve honed my teaching skills by tutoring my three younger brothers throughout their schooling, including in subjects like calculus, college prep, and everything in between. I pride myself on creating a supportive environment where students feel confident to ask questions and tackle challenges head-on. Whether you’re working to improve your grades, prepare for exams, or simply build confidence in math, I’m here to guide you every step of the way. When I’m not tutoring, I enjoy traveling (I have been to 23 countries!), reading (my favorite author is Stephen King), and painting.

As a math tutor, I focus on creating a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and tackling challenging problems. My teaching philosophy centers on breaking down complex concepts into manageable, relatable parts, tailoring my explanations to each student’s unique learning style.

A Typical Lesson Plan
Each lesson begins with a quick review of previous material to reinforce understanding and ensure continuity. Then, we dive into the day’s topic, starting with an overview of the concept and why it’s important. I guide students through example problems, encouraging active participation while providing step-by-step explanations. Once the foundation is laid, we work collaboratively on practice problems, gradually shifting responsibility to the student to apply what they've learned. I wrap up each session with a summary of key takeaways and assign tailored practice problems to solidify their understanding.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
- interdisciplinary background in Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences with a Mathematics Minor from UC San Diego. This allows me to bring a unique perspective to teaching math, connecting abstract concepts to real-world applications in science, technology, and other fields. My recent experience as a student means I understand the challenges students face and can relate to their struggles, offering both academic support as well. I am patient, adaptable, and committed to helping students succeed, no matter their starting point.

*Who the Lessons Are For*
My lessons are tailored for a wide range of students, including:
- Middle School and High School Students: Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus.
- College Students: Courses such as Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and applied mathematics for science and engineering.
- Adult Learners: Those looking to improve their math skills for personal growth, professional development, or returning to school.

I specialize in helping students who may feel overwhelmed by math, guiding them step-by-step to grasp the material and build their confidence
