About Charlie

I am a friendly open minded person, who has built my career in music off of my own back and worked hard to be a staple in the music scene, with numerous connections to amazing musicians. My favourite style of playing is funk and Jazz. I do lots of small Jazz gigs, and go to many jams where I like to relax and do bits of general playing. My other favourite genre is Soul, Erykh Badu, Cleo soul, Aretha Franklin. I have a wealth of knowledge about the history of music, which is a topic I'm always working on and learning about, I think it can be the most under appreciated part of learning about music. I like to chat and pass on this knowledge in my lessons, and give my student as much inspiration as my teachers gave as I was very lucky to have great tutors when I was younger who gave me their passion and knowledge which inspired me to go and take music, and I want to go and give that inspiration to as many other people as I can.

I offer both hour and half an hour lessons. Hour lessons for more experienced students who are slightly older, and also half an hour for younger children who may not be able to do a full hour. I offer lessons to all ages from as young as year 3, all the way to 40+ years old. My style of teaching is very simple, enjoy & learn. You will not remember how to do anything if you're not enjoying yourself, so I plan my lessons accordingly to each person ensuring they continue to enjoy themselves while also pushing the boundaries of their playing and trying new challenging pieces. Usually for younger children I start them off with grades, and from there I will decipher what makes them the most engaged whether that is doing pieces and having targets and goals or improvisation and just learning how to play the drums by ear. With Older students a lot come to me with specific goals they want to get out of the drums, which then I would write up a plan according to their desire. I am trained in both reading music as I come from an orchestra and classical background, to also learning by ear and relying on having good feel and knowledge of creating music on the kit. My planning always consists of a goal, whatever route we decide to take, as goals are a way of making the impossible possible, and then take each lesson as one further step to the goal whatever that may be, like taking a grade exam or playing a new improvised piece. I am qualified in every level up to BA Hons in Popular music, with an A-level in music and also GCSE, with Grades 1-8 also under my belt. Other than my qualifications I am a well experienced musician gigging constantly across the Leeds scene, playing numerous shows across the country, such as tramlines festival, truck festival and Victorious festival and a multitude of shows in London. I have played venues such as the wardrobe, Belgrave, Budenelle, HPBC and oporto + many more! I run my own teaching business in my own studio down in the Meanwood Area where we could take lessons, or lessons online which is something I do as well. This is ran under and supported by Leeds Drum Studio, one of the best places in Leeds for drummers ran by Kevin Reid who owns Amedia Cymbals and Balbex sticks which I am endorsed by. So if we cannot work things out Ie. timings, I can pass you onto to some of the best tutors in Leeds that I work with.
