About Sean
I’ve maintained a job since I was 14 during my high school and later my college education. I’ve worked as a researcher and in retail worker. No matter what the job is I always bring professionalism and preparation. Mathematics never came easy to me and spent much of my education immersing myself in the practice necessary to do well (voluntary summer education and reading textbooks). With that experience I have incredible empathy for students that are struggling but want to do better. My communication skills have been honed by presenting my research at multiple conferences (and my family members who have more patience for my passion than I could ever expect). Perhaps the most important thing that qualifies me is I love science and work it takes to learn.

I graduated from Carleton College and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Engineering Physics at UC San Diego, where my research focuses on nuclear fusion. Alongside my research, I have participated in scientific outreach and mentoring programs for middle and high school students. Throughout my own education, I experienced the challenges and anxiety that often accompany STEM coursework and examinations, which has shaped my approach to tutoring.
My lessons follow a structured but flexible format. I begin each session by asking the student to spend five minutes explaining the topic in their own words while I ask conceptual, big-picture questions. This allows me to identify misconceptions and target the areas that need the most attention before we begin problem solving.
The majority of the session is devoted to working through carefully selected practice problems, drawn from textbooks or the student’s coursework. Rather than simply providing answers, I focus on helping students develop a clear problem-solving methodology and understand the reasoning behind each step. After every problem, I set aside time for questions to reinforce key concepts and address lingering confusion.
During the final five to ten minutes of each lesson, we review what was learned, identify concepts that remain challenging, and establish goals for the next session. When a major topic has been completed over multiple lessons, I prepare a short review consisting of modified versions of previously covered problems. I assess this independently before the following session to evaluate retention and identify any remaining gaps in understanding.
I believe effective tutoring is an adaptive process rather than a fixed formula. Every student learns differently, so I continually adjust my teaching methods based on student progress, parent feedback, and the individual’s learning style to create the most effective learning experience possible.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
As someone who isn't particularly confident with physics, Sean is great at taking complex, theoretical ideas and making them more approachable. He can break difficult concepts into simpler, more understandable pieces, making it possible to build back up. He's patient and genuinely wants others to understand.
