About Jos
I trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, where I completed a joint specialism in saxophone performance and composition, the first student to do so in the college's modern history. In 2023 I was awarded the RNCM Rob Buckland Saxophone Composition Prize, and I work as a professional performer and composer alongside my teaching. Music theory isn't something I teach from a textbook; it's something I use every day to write and perform.
That's the difference I try to bring to it. Theory has a reputation for being dry and abstract, a set of rules to memorise for an exam and then forget. I don't teach it that way. Because I'm constantly applying it in real music, I can show you what each concept actually does and why it matters, which makes it far easier to understand and to remember.
Every student arrives with a different level of confidence, and theory in particular tends to come with a bit of dread attached. I take pride in finding the explanation that works for the person in front of me, approaching an idea from whatever angle it takes until it clicks. My aim is simple: to make theory feel less like a hurdle and more like the thing that makes all your other music make sense.

For a lot of students, theory is the gate they need to get through: ABRSM requires grade 5 theory before you can sit grade 6 and above on your instrument, and it's often the thing standing between a player and their next practical exam. If that's you, I'll get you through it efficiently and properly, so it stops being a roadblock and starts making sense.
I cover the full grade 5 syllabus and work with GCSE and A-Level students too, building the harmony, analysis, and musicianship those courses depend on. Whichever you're working towards, lessons are tailored to exactly what your exam or course requires.
The difference with how I teach theory is that it never stays on the page. I'm a performer and composer, so we'll connect everything back to real music: why a particular chord does what it does, how the rules you're learning actually play out in the pieces you know. Theory taught this way is far easier to remember, because it finally means something rather than being a set of facts to memorise.
We'll cover the essentials thoroughly: harmony, melody, rhythm, intervals, keys, and form, and I'll make sure you don't just know the answers but understand why they're right. That understanding is what holds up under exam pressure, and what makes you a sharper musician long after the exam's done.
Get the theory solid, and everything else you do in music gets easier.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Jos really helped with my sons Maths in a few weeks, he picked up quickly where he lacked and was really informative in the lessons and in between session checking in and setting homework. My Son felt a lot more confident going into his GCSEs after lessons with Jos. Jos was also very honest on if he felt he didn’t need extra lessons and said to not waste money if he was capable of achieving a pass mark at that stage. Would use him again.
Thanks again JosI’ve been taking saxophone lessons with Jos for about six months now and we have been focusing on classical repertoire and technique. I have seen such a big improvement in this time and couldn’t recommend him more!
We asked Jos to give our son a few lessons when he was struggling with his GCSE coursework. His tuition was so helpful! My son found him so easy to get along with and he said that Jos quickly helped him understand problems that he'd been struggling with in the classroom! Really highly recommended by us!
Jos tutored my son online in the last few months before GCSE, as he was struggling with certain concepts and losing what little motivation there had been. Jos was quickly able to put my son at ease, discern the areas of the curriculum on which to focus and then put forward a tutoring plan. Jos is very organised, well prepared and reliable. My son was happy and even enjoyed the sessions.
Jos worked with me to explain four part harmony and other areas of composition I struggling with. He has a way of explaining things that makes it easy to understand. He also helped me with musical theory. He is calm, patient and very personable. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking to improve your understanding of musical composition and theory.
