About Emily
I have a strong academic and professional background in psychology, with a particular focus on abnormal psychology and behavioral science. I double majored in Psychology and Sociology, with an academic focus in abnormal psychology, and completed my undergraduate education at Western Michigan University.
My psychology-related academic experience includes:
* Teaching Assistant for one year for a college-level Abnormal Psychology course at Western Michigan University
* Two research apprenticeships within the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) department at Western Michigan University
* Member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology
* Participated in a psychology poster presentation and received a ranking/recognition for my presentation
* Extensive coursework in abnormal psychology, behavioral neuroscience, psychological disorders, research, and human behavior
* Experience working with psychological research and applying psychological concepts to real-world situations
I also currently work in behavioral healthcare as both a Psychiatric Technician and Case Manager at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services. These roles have given me hands-on experience working directly with individuals receiving mental health services and have allowed me to apply the psychological concepts I studied in an actual clinical setting.
My experience as a college-level Abnormal Psychology TA is particularly important to my tutoring approach. I have experience not only learning psychology at an advanced level, but also helping other college students understand difficult psychological concepts. Combined with my research experience and professional behavioral healthcare background, I am able to approach psychology from an academic, research, teaching, and real-world perspective.

My approach to tutoring psychology is focused on helping students truly understand the material rather than simply memorize definitions. Before each session, I ask students to provide relevant course materials such as lecture slides, study guides, assignments, or topics they are struggling with. This allows me to review their specific course material beforehand, refresh my own knowledge, and come prepared to provide accurate and personalized support.
During a session, I first identify what the student understands and where they are having difficulty. I then break complicated concepts into smaller pieces and use real-life examples, comparisons, practice questions, and active recall to reinforce the material. When appropriate, I may create case studies based specifically on their course material. For example, we might work through a hypothetical patient and identify which psychological concepts, theories, symptoms, or behaviors apply.
I also like to create short quizzes or review questions based on the material we covered. These can be used at the end of a session to check understanding or taken home as additional practice before an exam. This gives students something concrete to review between sessions and helps reinforce the material over time.
A typical lesson may include reviewing difficult concepts, working through class material together, applying concepts to case studies, and practicing questions. I finish by reviewing the most important concepts and making sure the student feels comfortable explaining and applying them independently.
What sets me apart is my background in psychology, including coursework in abnormal psychology and behavioral neuroscience, research experience, and hands-on experience in behavioral healthcare. I enjoy connecting academic concepts to real-world situations while keeping explanations approachable and easy to understand. My goal is not simply to give students the answer, but to help them develop the understanding and confidence to arrive at the answer themselves.
I primarily tutor high school and college-level psychology students, including introductory psychology and courses involving abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, and research methods and statistics.
