I do not think of teaching guitar in a way that is angled towards any particular genre, but rather in a way that maps out the instrument, making the entire fretboard accessible to the player. In order to do this I work through single note melodies from different genres, harmonization of melody, scales of different kinds in five closed positions, chord progressions that sooner than later steps away from the open chords we usually learn when we first pick up the instrument. I find comping to be of great importance, as that is what we do first and foremost as guitar players. I am intrigued by solo guitar playing, meaning playing chords and melody at the same time to free the guitar from the need of a band in order to create a wholesome musical experience. The element of improvisation is to me very important, as I find that to be the closets to a verbal conversation that we get in music.
I grew up in Sweden where I attended the music program at Hivtfeldtska Gymnasiet (high school level), the jazz program at Sommenbygdens Folkhögskola (pre-university jazz school), and spent three semesters at the University of Örebro where I studied to become a music teacher. I toured Sweden and recorded albums with the reggae band Dubadown (full length album and EP can be found on Spotify), and later with the hiphop group Middlesex (recordings can be found on Spotify). At the age of 26 I relocated to Vancouver to study at the jazz program at Capilano University. In 2015, after graduation, I moved to Calgary to work as a guitar instructor and a musician. Here I have played with the Alex Ginella Band (recordings can be found on Spotify) and in different jazz constellations. Among them the CJO, The Redline Trio, as a musician behind Quincy Troupe and Sheri-D Wilson at the Cagary Jazz Fest, and with Johnny Summers trios, quartets and quintets. Before the pandemic I held a solo jazz guitar gig every third Saturday at the Vinroom in Mission. Aside being a working musician, I have worked as a guitar instructor.
I do not offer the first lesson for free. I offer 45 minute lessons for $40 each, and 60 min lessons for $50 each.
