About Deanna

I have been teaching both harp and music theory for about four years now. In my undergrad, I worked with harpists in the pre-college program (both students that were preparing for conservatory and students pursuing harp purely for fun), and started teaching in the college music theory department three years ago. My students appreciate my thoughtful planning and organized approach to music-making; I aim to give them a framework on which they can build their own skills and take command of their music.

In harp, I give lessons to students of all ages and abilities; I find it equally exciting to set the technical and rudimentary foundations or inspire an already skilled harpist to push their own limits and soar. In music theory, I work best with high school and college students. As someone who learned music theory in college (with a performance oriented, blended Schenkerian approach), I recommend waiting until high school (at least) to delve into the subject - music theory can unfold like great literature if you give it the time and space to do so. For younger students, I work to develop their fundamental skills: reading music, developing strong rhythm, understanding meter, singing scales and intervals, and developing an inherent sense of musicality - it's never to early to learn to feel music!
