About Maxwell

I attended Troy Schools growing up, graduating from Troy High School. I have always been comfortable with people - I was voted best teammate on my high school football team, announced for various sporting events, and hosted pep assemblies and events. I then attended Michigan State University and was a 3.84 GPA graduate. I spoke at my college graduation, which was a huge honor! Suffice to say, I have experience with what consistently works on both ends of the student-teacher dynamic.

Nowadays I am a high school teacher. I have been at my current school for four years. I love doing “Food Fridays” in my AP Chemistry course, to explore the applied use of chemistry in something we all know and love... Food! I have taught AP Chemistry for 3 years, which always gives me more to explore with respect to content, demonstrations, and lab materials. Geometry also has a special place in my heart as the most underrated math class. I have a full proof for whenever a student asks me, “When am I ever going to use this?” (Side note: it is really ironic asking someone to “prove” why they need proofs.)

In my free time, I like to spend time with my wife, explore nature on my bike, walk with my dogs, and watch college football and basketball!

About the lesson

I’ve been teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, and AP Chemistry for several years. Thus, my lessons are useful for middle and high school math and chemistry students who want help with homework, tests, or just understanding concepts more thoroughly.

I believe that all students can succeed with the right combination of guidance, hard work, and the addition of tools to their toolbox. This can manifest in a variety of ways, which I cater to each individual student.

Some students simply need to hear the step-by-step guide from a different teacher when navigating a troublesome problem set. Other students need problems put in real world terms that they can understand - like food or money for instance.

When a student has an upcoming test or assessment, I guide students through constructing study flashcards/foldables, working out problems on a whiteboard, or utilizing online tools like “Blooket”.

Students need to find what clicks for them, and I love to help them through that process. I try to balance consistency, so students know what to expect, but I also vary my approach to the needs of the student or concept at hand. I also have lots of extra resources to practice and explore topics more deeply.
