About Joel
I am a qualified secondary History teacher with QTS and a PGCE, with experience teaching students across Key Stages 3 and 4, including GCSE History.
I became a teacher because I genuinely enjoy working with young people and helping them develop both their knowledge and confidence. History is a subject I am passionate about, and I particularly enjoy taking topics or exam questions that initially seem complicated and breaking them down into something students can understand and approach with confidence.
Through my classroom experience, I have taught students with a wide range of abilities and learning needs. This has taught me that there is no single approach that works for every student. I take the time to understand how each individual learns, identify gaps in their knowledge and adapt my teaching accordingly.
I have experience teaching Edexcel GCSE History, including areas such as Medicine Through Time, Weimar and Nazi Germany and the British sector of the Western Front. I also have extensive experience teaching a broad range of historical periods at KS3.
As a tutor, I aim to create a friendly, supportive and professional environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and getting things wrong. Mistakes are an important part of learning, and I want students to leave lessons feeling more confident than when they arrived.
Whether a student is struggling with History, aiming for a particular GCSE grade, looking to improve their exam technique or simply wants to push themselves further, I will tailor our lessons around what will help them make the most progress.

I am a qualified secondary History teacher with QTS and a PGCE, offering one-to-one tutoring for students from Key Stage 3 through to GCSE.
My approach to tutoring is highly relational and responsive. I believe students make the most progress when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and admitting when they do not understand something. I therefore take time to build a positive relationship with each student and adapt my teaching to their individual strengths, areas for development and confidence.
Lessons are typically one hour long and combine clear teacher explanation with guided and independent practice. I regularly model difficult concepts and exam questions step-by-step, showing students not only what a strong answer looks like, but how to construct one themselves.
Throughout each lesson, I use frequent checks for understanding, including targeted questioning, retrieval practice and short tasks. This allows me to identify misconceptions quickly and reteach or explain material in a different way where necessary, rather than simply moving on because we have "covered" a topic.
For GCSE students, I place particular emphasis on developing both secure historical knowledge and exam technique. This includes breaking down different question types, modelling high-quality responses, practising planning and writing answers, and giving specific feedback that students can immediately act upon. My experience teaching the Edexcel GCSE History specification means I am particularly familiar with the knowledge and examination skills students are expected to demonstrate.
I also use scaffolding and chunking to make challenging material manageable, gradually removing support as students become more confident. Where appropriate, I use more challenging questioning and tasks to ensure that higher-attaining students are stretched rather than simply completing additional work.
Ultimately, my aim is not just to help students memorise content, but to develop their knowledge, confidence, historical thinking and ability to work independently.
