About Lizzie

My approach to teaching saxophone combines a dedication to technical precision with a passion for expressive freedom. I begin by focusing on the building blocks: breath support, embouchure, finger coordination, posture, and rhythmic stability. These elements form the foundation for healthy, confident playing. Tone production is a major focus, where I help students refine articulation, dynamics, phrasing, and vibrato to shape a unique musical voice. Music theory and ear training are woven into lessons through relevant repertoire and improvisational activities, fostering deeper musical understanding. Improvisation is central to my philosophy; I break it down into manageable components such as scales, motifs, and rhythmic phrasing, enabling students to improvise confidently and creatively. Lessons are tailored to each student’s musical preferences and ambitions, whether that means jazz standards, blues, pop, or classical works. I leverage technology, including recording apps, loopers, and play-along tracks, to enrich practice and inspire creativity. One rewarding experience was helping a student develop from a hesitant beginner into a confident performer who now enjoys leading solos in ensembles. I strive to cultivate an encouraging and inspiring environment where students grow as musicians and individuals, finding joy in every note they play.

My teaching philosophy as a saxophone educator revolves around the balance of disciplined technique and uninhibited musical expression. I focus on establishing strong fundamentals including breath support, embouchure health, articulation clarity, finger dexterity, and tonal consistency to build a versatile, sustainable playing approach.

I integrate theory, ear training, and jazz harmony early to help students understand the structure of music and empower them in improvisational contexts. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s musical preferences and goals, whether exploring complex bebop lines, soulful ballads, or modern grooves.

Improvisation forms a key pillar of my instruction, and I guide students through incremental stages like scale work, melodic shaping, rhythmic phrasing, and dynamic control to nurture creativity and self-assurance. I incorporate interactive methods such as call-and-response, improvisation games, and play-along tracks to enhance listening skills and spontaneity. Technology supports our work with tools like recording devices, slow-downer apps, and digital loopers, fostering reflective and inventive practice.

Performance coaching, including stage presence, audience engagement, and anxiety management, prepares students to communicate authentically on stage. One of my proudest moments was helping a student transform from a technically hesitant beginner into a confident soloist leading their school jazz band. My goal is to create a warm, encouraging space where students feel inspired to grow both technically and artistically on the saxophone.
