About Rex

My photographic career started in 1980 when I taught advanced photography at Nelson Polytechnic in NZ. This led me into the film industry where I learned my craft and directed, edited, and produced commercials and documentaries all over the world. Now in the world of Digital Photography, I constantly work with clients Internationally, as well as developing my own artistic style based on a history of advertising for all major brands. From attractive landscapes to defined portraits, my canvas is constantly changing and evolves with every creative challenge and opportunity. I am experienced with Hasselblad, Phase One, and Canon Still cameras and in the movie world everything from Red Epics, and Alexas, through to Panavision Cameras and Lenses.

From a director's point of view, I love working with talent and want to share this skill with my students as this is the most important aspect of getting a result that's rewarding for all concerned.

Over the years I have taught well over 100 people who many have gone onto working in Hollywood and Internationally. Many of these are now household names, which is fantastic. Many of these have worked alongside me, behind and in front of the camera. It's always a collaborative affair, and I am always learning from my students, no matter how old or young they are.

About the lesson

My teaching method is best described by working one on one or in small groups, whereby I challenge the student to look outside the normal confines of how things are seen. This comes from decades of having to think quickly in finding solutions, looking at what might work and what doesn't, and images that create successful campaigns. Everything else can be easily explained via youtube and through technical data. Capturing the essence of something takes something else.

In many ways I prefer to work one on one and am happy to have someone work as an assistant on various shoots, and learn the craft as we go. This can be packaged accordingly as I work with different models throughout the month. Prices available on application.
