About Melany
**************************ABOUT ME*************************
I got my start in Celtic Music as a teenager when I saw that Party in Third Class in the Movie Titanic. I bought my first tin whistle when I was 14 and have never looked back!
Since then, I have been involved in the Celtic and Irish music community wherever I travel, be it at home in the Lower Mainland, down to the US in Washington State and Oregon, or as far as Ireland and Japan (yes! They play Irish music there too!). I have many friends all over the world thanks to this music!
I've been playing Tin Whistle for over 25 years, and started playing Irish flute for the last 10 years. I've been taught by David Lambe of Co. Monaghan and taken intensive workshops with some of the masters of the tradition, such as Mary Bergin, Catherine McEvoy, Patsy Hanly, and Kevin Crawford to name a few!
I am also the Vice President and teacher of the Vancouver School of Irish Music, a non-profit society dedicated to teaching children and teens Irish traditional music, as well as offering workshops from well-known Irish musicians.
I have performed at Celticfest, Canada's biggest Celtic festival, the Bellingham Celtic Festival, weddings, consular events with the Government of Ireland, and other St Patrick's Day events locally and abroad.
Weekly, you will find me down at Foy's Irish Bar every Sunday for our Irish music session.
***What is Irish Traditional Music and what is an Irish Music Session?***
Irish traditional music is the folk music of Ireland.
It is less a musical style and more like a language.
The more you “speak” it, the more proficient you become.
Traditional music does not exist on notes or tabs. It comes
alive through a song sung, a tune played, a story shared,
or the magical moment when everyone is playing in
sync, rhythm, and together in unison. Your ear is
your superpower, and listening to yourself and
others is the most important skill you will have in
this music.
The Irish music session is like a dinner party. We
start conversations, listen to each other, share our
commonality and differences, and give other
musicians space to speak. No one is coming with a
written speech that’s scripted at someone’s dinner
table! It is an organic, natural, communal gathering
to share in the experience of playing music
together.

My guiding principle is… FUN! My teaching style is
less top-down, theory-focused tautology, and
more like a personal coaching session. I want you
to have fun while learning this music! I’d like to
know why you want to play, what your
musical goals are (both big and small!), and what
your previous musical background is. And if you
are a beginner, no worries! I will work with you on a
plan to get you interested in Irish traditional music and
to play in a simple, student-focused, holistic, and fun
way. I will also work through any concerns or issues
you have, such as injuries or hurdles you may have
faced while learning on your own or in other
musical pursuits.
I will teach you aurally (by ear), as this common in Irish music and many other folk traditions. It's not as hard as it seems! I can also provide ABC notation in the beginning to help guide you in our lessons. I encourage my students to video/record me playing the tune both fast and slow, so you can start listening to how the music is played.
I also strongly encourage my students to attend
beginner and intermediate Irish music sessions to start finding
like-minded people to play with. As with my
language analogy, Irish music is best played in a
community, and you will include many other people
with different instruments and backgrounds who
will be part of your musical journey.
