About Tian

Professional & Academic Pedigree
As a Math and Econometrics double major from the University of California, Irvine, I went on to work as an investment banker across major financial hubs, including New York City, Hong Kong, and Beijing. I also hold a Computer Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Previous Teaching Experience
I have approached my teaching initiatives with the mindset of an entrepreneur—building tailored programs from scratch. In fact, I was the "mini-entrepreneur" in all three cases below.

Elite Test Prep: Specializing in GRE quantitative preparation (the entrance exam for graduate school). I scored a 331/340 overall, with a perfect 170 on the quantitative section.

Financial Modeling: Teaching Excel financial modeling, a core quantitative skill that investment bankers and private equity professionals use daily to evaluate complex businesses.

Early Mentorship: My first teaching role began at age 14, where I independently tutored English to primary school students in China, giving me an early foundation in patience and student engagement.

Bonus - A fun fact:
I have been running a business & finance podcast for over 4 years. One episode was featured on the front page of a mainstream podcasting platform, completely out of organic traffic.

What Sets Me Apart
A Focus on the "Why": I place a deep emphasis on why a student is learning a specific concept, connecting it back to their own goals and interests. As a senior in college taking advanced elective math courses such as random processes & financial options mathematics, I spent a lot of time pondering the deeper significance of the material. I truly believe that a student can only master a subject once they understand its fundamental purpose.

Multilingual Capability: I am fully fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese, and have professional working proficiency in French (pour les familles francophones). I also understand Cantonese, allowing me to connect comfortably with diverse families.

Versatile Communication: My past students have ranged in age from 8 to over 30 years old. I custom-tailor my tone, pace, and explanation style to match the psychological profile of each individual learner.

A Typical Lesson Plan
I design every lesson plan by first understanding the student's unique bottlenecks and identifying what styles haven't worked for them in the past. Eliminating ineffective methods is the fastest way to discover how a student truly learns.

During a session, I actively guide students through their own critical thinking process, stepping in to clarify concepts only when they hit a wall. Through this active iteration, we quickly pinpoint and repair gaps in their core knowledge base.

In my view, strong foundations always trump quick shortcuts or tricks. If a student understands the material inside out, the exam takes care of itself. Consequently, my homework assignments focus heavily on high-quality problem-solving over sheer quantity.
