About Paul
"Unlock your musical potential and pave your way to success with personalized lessons from a seasoned Jazz musician and educator with over 45 years of experience. I've toured the world with The Frank Zappa Band from 1987-1989 and directed the Jazz program at the world-famous Idyllwild Arts Academy. I've also released several critically acclaimed albums under my name. I have extensive experience guiding students through college applications and auditions. My students have been accepted to the world's most prestigious universities and conservatories, including Juilliard, USC, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Berklee, Eastman, The New School, Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Royal College of Music, and more. As the director of Jazz studies at the prestigious Idyllwild Arts Academy (an international performing arts boarding school in Southern California) for over 17 years, I taught the program's Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Theory, Jazz History, Computer Notation, and Saxophone Private lessons. The ensembles have consistently reached 1st place at national festivals and competitions, including the Berklee High School Jazz Festival and the Reno Jazz Festival. Whether you're diving deep into the intricacies of music theory, refining your improvisation skills, or seeking guidance for auditions, I will meet you where you are and take you as far as you would like. Each session is tailored to accommodate your unique learning style and aspirations to help you meet (and exceed) your goals. If you are preparing for college applications, I will help you develop and submit an audition that will get you the most attention from the school or program you want to attend, drawing upon 17 years of experience getting students into the top Jazz programs in the world." Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Paul has the amazing quality of being a teacher who can break down complicated topics into digestible pieces and build them back up every step of the way. His ability to explain things from different perspectives also allows him to understand and entertain the unique and varied needs of his students.
Not only does he have a deep teaching understanding, but he also has the experience of performing and recording from a fruitful career to back it up.
Any student that has the opportunity to study with Paul is a fortunate one.
I have known Paul for over 30 years as both a professional musician, educator, and dear friend. We have performed together in many different ensembles, and I have invited him to work with our students at Saddleback College many times. He is an excellent musician on many levels but his vast experience and knowledge as an improvisor and composer are his strongest qualities. Having witnessed his teaching over decades in a variety of institutions including the Idyllwild Arts Academy for 20 years, I can highly recommend him as a great teacher who connects with those who seek to learn.
