About Uwakmfon-Abasi

Hi! I’m Uwakmfon-Abasi, a recent graduate of Johns Hopkins University, where I studied Molecular and Cellular Biology and Public Health Studies.

I have experience tutoring children in Baltimore, including students who were struggling with math or performing below their expected grade level. Working with students taught me that sometimes a child does not need to be told the same thing again. They need someone to explain it differently, slow down, and give them the confidence to keep trying.

I have always enjoyed working with children and mentoring younger students. In addition to tutoring, I served as a first-year mentor during college, which strengthened my ability to listen, encourage, and adapt to the needs of different students.

Math has always been one of the subjects I enjoy, particularly algebra and geometry. As a tutor, I hope to make challenging material feel less intimidating while helping students become more confident and independent learners.

About the lesson

My approach to tutoring is patient, encouraging, and personalized to each student. I especially enjoy algebra and geometry, and I like helping students understand the reasoning behind a problem rather than simply memorizing steps.

I usually begin by identifying what the student already understands and where they are having difficulty. From there, I break the topic into smaller steps, work through examples with them, and gradually allow them to solve problems more independently. If one explanation does not click, I am happy to approach the concept in a different way.

A typical lesson may include reviewing previous material or homework, introducing or revisiting a challenging concept, completing practice problems together, and ending with a few problems for the student to attempt independently.

My lessons are best suited for elementary and middle school students, including students who need extra support or want to strengthen their math skills. I can also work with students learning foundational algebra and geometry. My goal is to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence in their abilities.
