About Yu Yu

Yu Yu Liu Bio

Taiwanese cellist Yu Yu Liu is a dedicated musician based in the Vancouver area. Ms. Liu is the newest appointed principal cellist at the Prince George Symphony Orchestra. She will also be a new section member of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in 2024. When she isn’t performing on stage, she devotes her time and energy to teaching young cellists at the Shuang Music School in West Vancouver. She also coaches chamber music at the Surrey Youth Orchestra. Ms. Liu has made appearances at the Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony 21.

Ms. Liu holds both a master's degree and a bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School under the guidance of Astrid Schween and Fred Sherry. She also received a master’s degree in Orchestral Performance from Manhattan School of Music under the guidance of Qiang Tu. During her studies, she worked under the batons of Leonard Slatkin, Semyon Bychkov, Marin Alsop and Alan Gilbert in venues such as Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, and Alice Tully Hall. To name a few notable events, Ms. Liu gave the NY premiere of Yoshirō Irino’s Three Pieces for Cello Solo (1969), recorded for Fala Chen’s award-winning director-debut short film called the “Passenger”, gave the world premiere of Saad Haddad’s “Thulathi”, and many other remarkable projects.

As an orchestral player, Ms. Liu worked tirelessly with several orchestras in the tri-state. She held the principal position at Ensemble 212 from 2016 to 2022. She made regular appearances at Bare Opera, Riverside Choral Society, New York Concerti Sinfonietta, Opera Italiana Orchestra, to list a few. She has been invited to several summer programs, such as Composers Conference: Contemporary Performance Institute, Interlochen Arts Camp, (concealed information) and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan.

Outside of the practice room, Yu Yu enjoys going to the movies and hiking with her family and her two cats, Bilbo and Frodo.

As a graduate from both The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, I have had a tremendous amount of experiences in teaching cello, coaching chamber music, and educational outreach. I have a small private studio and occasionally give extra lessons to students of Astrid Schween and Qiang Tu. I also work closely with Yari Bond, who is one of the cello faculty at The Special Music School and Lucy Moses School at Kaufman Music Center. She has given me many opportunities to coach her students and observe her lessons. I recently moved back to British Columbia to live near my family, so some of my students are taught remotely. I’m hoping to build a teaching studio where I can continue my passion of teaching and sharing music. Over the years, I have developed my teaching style based on the Suzuki method and provide different materials depending on each student’s level, learning ability, and personality. I believe having a core syllabus of repertoire and supplemental materials (i.e. scales, etudes, music theory, etc.) can produce a steady growth of progress and proper discipline for both my students and myself. My students are also assigned to listen to recordings for motivation and inspiration. As a chamber musician, I also focus on the importance of collaborating with other musicians. I often play duets with my students or accompany them on the piano to just simply have fun with music.
