About Herbert
Herbert Kwan (關程曦) is a Canadian pianist, composer, and music director, and a recognized Young Steinway Artist. A recipient of the Sing Tao Daily Young Professional Medal of Merit and the King Charles III Coronation Medal (2025) for his contributions to the arts, he has collaborated with renowned artists including Frances Yip, Power Station, Henry Huo, Anson Ping, and Ada Jin. He has also served as a judge for the auditions of The Voice of China, and as music director or featured performer for major galas supporting Vancouver General Hospital, BC Children's Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, and the Canadian Cancer Society. As a composer and arranger, he has released original albums Forever YourS and Music Left Unspoken, alongside works such as Things I Must Believe and Once Upon Me, with a focus on cinematic piano writing and hybrid classical–pop orchestration. He is the founder of MusicLife Academy and the creator of Pop Keyology, a contemporary pop piano method, and is currently planning a multi-city solo tour in Asia featuring his original music.

Learn to play Pop Piano in 4 easy Steps:
Step 1: Play the Melody (this will be the only 5 line staff that you will be reading
Step 2: Basic Solid Chord (Learn to find the 4 types of chords which covers 99% of pop songs)
Step 3: Rhythm Patterns (Learn different patterns for the chords and use them as accompaniment on the left hand)
Step 4:Right Hand Embellishments (learn the different types of embellishments to add to your melody played by the right hand)
You will be able to play the song whether up to step 2 or all the way to step 4, accordingly to your comfort level of playing.
