About Gil

Finding the right teacher is important. Music lessons should be about more than just learning notes—they should inspire you to become a better musician and develop a lifelong love of music. That’s why I offer a free 30-minute trial lesson, so you can see if I’m the right fit for you. I have always loved practicing and playing music, and sharing that passion with others has become one of the most rewarding parts of my life. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and excitement for what I do, whether we’re working on the ins and outs of the saxophone or clarinet, developing technique and improvisation, or simply talking about and listening to great music. I hold a Master’s in Jazz Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas. I have been teaching for 25 years and continue to perform professionally throughout Texas and beyond. My recent work includes recording and releasing my album The Sound of Resistance, an acoustic jazz project featuring some of Austin’s outstanding musicians. Recording, performing, and teaching are all connected for me—I bring the experience of being an active professional musician directly into my lessons. Whether you’re just starting out, preparing for an audition, or looking to take your playing to the next level, I’d love the opportunity to work with you.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is simple: every student is different, so every lesson should be different. With 25 years of teaching experience, I tailor lessons to each student’s goals, interests, strengths, and challenges rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. Lessons combine strong fundamentals—tone, technique, articulation, scales, and sight-reading—with the music students actually want to play. Depending on the student, we may also work on jazz improvisation, ear training, music theory, classical repertoire, audition preparation, or performance skills. A typical lesson includes a warm-up, technical work, repertoire, and focused work on areas that need improvement. I also give students specific practice goals so they know exactly what to work on between lessons. Most importantly, I want students to become independent musicians, not simply people who can play the notes. I teach students how to listen, solve problems, practice efficiently, and understand the music they are playing. Whether you are a beginner, an advanced player, a student preparing for an audition, or an adult wanting to improve your playing, my goal is for you to leave every lesson with a better understanding of your instrument, something new to work on, and a genuine desire to play.
