About Nathan

My name is Nathan, I'm 22 years old and I'm studying acoustics in engineering school (INSA) and clarinet at the Conservatoire Régional de Lyon. I obtained my DEM in 2020.

Passionate about clarinet and classical music, I have several years of experience in wind band and symphony orchestra. I frequently perform in public, often as a clarinet-piano duet, but also in chamber music, and soon as a concert performer with an orchestra. I am also open to jazz, contemporary music and especially to traditional music such as klezmer.

My taste for teaching began in science, where I was a physics tutor for 1st year students at INSA. Faced with musical competitions, academic exams and driven by the desire to improve day by day, I gradually became interested in the sciences of learning and the psychology of performance. I am surprised that such valuable knowledge is not widely disseminated, which is why I have made it my mission to pass on to my students what I learn every day.

I look forward to meeting you!

Hello !
My name is Nathan and I am a student at the end of my studies at the Lyon Conservatory and at the INSA engineering school, two environments that require me to spend a lot of time learning.

For a long time, I ensured my progress by putting myself through a mountain of work, which often consisted of mechanically repeating the same passage "until I get it right". But one day, my clarinet teacher uttered this little phrase that immediately resonated with me: "Your best teacher is yourself."

I understood the need to develop a good method to learn in an efficient and enjoyable way. I want to pass on these valuable skills to my students, of all ages and levels. My methodology is as follows:

1. Set a goal

Before the first lesson, I get in touch with the student to understand the context in which he/she evolves, his/her expectations and needs. This also allows me to break the ice and start the class in a relaxed atmosphere. Based on this information, we set a long-term goal: to be able to play a piece in public, to join an orchestra, a band, to succeed in a competition... This goal will give direction to each class and to each individual practice session. Moreover, a well-defined objective allows us to visualize the path to follow, and motivates us to practice regularly.

2. Develop your analytical skills

The best way to progress is also the most pragmatic: for each problem, a solution. My role is to give the student all the keys to overcome each obstacle he faces in the long run.

-First, the problem must be identified as precisely as possible. My objective here is to encourage the student's ability to listen, to help him/her to self-diagnose.

-Once the problem has been identified, it is necessary to determine the cause: what is it due to? Often, for beginners, it is very difficult to find out on their own why a note tends to go off or even not come out. I am obviously there to teach the student all the technique of the instrument, but also to teach him to find the causes of his problems by himself. To do this, we work on posture, breathing, finger position and body tension management.

-Finally, we have to find a solution to the problem, which is often a negation of the cause (for example, relaxing a muscle instead of tightening it). To anchor a new technique, I propose a series of warm-up rituals or exercises.

My classes take place at home in Villeurbanne and Lyon, or remotely. Each class is recorded and sent to the student so that he or she can have long-term access to the notions covered during the class.

Be prepared to be surprised by the speed of your progress and by the pleasure you will find in playing!
