About Nicole

I'm a pianist with 14 years of experience in the classical genre, but I also have some additional skills that go beyond the realm of classical music. I have experience with composition, film scoring and free improvisation in self-developed styles.

About the lesson

I can teach anyone from a complete beginner to RCM Level 8. Only requirement is that you own a piano/keyboard with weighted keys.

There are three components to learning any skill. Applied to piano, these are:
Knowledge - how much do you understand about the music you are playing? Different markings in the sheet music, the composer's intentions with certain notes and chords, the overall structure of pieces are all knowledge that you have to acquire.
Technique - how well can you press the right keys and create a sound? Your ability to play accurately, tackle a range of pieces in different styles and knowing how to work on difficult passages until mastered are all techniques that you have to practice.
Creativity - how independent is your artistic vision? Your ability to experiment and change how you play a piece, make personal creative decisions when you have the liberty to do so, and ability to improvise or compose your own music are all aspects of creativity that can be discovered.

I'm willing to help you develop your skills and become a better pianist every day! Lessons can be tailored towards whatever you enjoy doing. However, I don't want you to simply play, I want you to understand the piano and music and see all the beautiful aspects of music that go beyond fingers pressing down on keys :)

Nicole is a great instructor. She is knowledgeable in both Music theory and playing Piano. I was completely clueless and had no idea where to start with piano. After one session with Nicole, I was able to play some basic cords and had a direction to improve on. Nicole explained theories with patience despite my lack of experience, and guide me to many materials and different digestible exercises. It was great having her and I don't really have negative to say. Highly recommended!

Nicole taught me how to play the basic chords of known pieces. I was surprised at how well it worked. For example, Nicole taught me how to play the Chopin prelude in E minor. Can't say that I'm the best, but i can now impress my family more!
