About Preston

I am a passionate educator and lifelong learner with three years of experience spanning secondary math instruction, special education, and collegiate-level academic support. I currently hold a Master’s in Teaching with dual certification in both Secondary Mathematics and Special Education. I have been able to bridge the gap between rigorous content and diverse learning needs.

Currently, I instruct Algebra I to 9th-grade students and Probability and Statistics to 12th grade students at Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove, where I continue to foster mathematical thinking through culturally responsive, multisensory approaches. This role allows me to integrate my passion for equity, creativity, and rigor into daily practice, supporting students at a pivotal stage in their academic journey.

Throughout my career, I've demonstrated a commitment to fostering inclusive and engaging environments that prioritize student growth and achievement. From supporting 7th and 8th-grade math lessons to researching alpha brain activity using EEG technology, I bring about my curiosity and self-motivation. My journey has led me to collaborate with organizations such as City Teaching Alliance and GO Foundation, further solidifying my role in education as a means to transform the lives of young individuals.

My commitment to data-driven instruction began in higher education, where I served as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Psychology and Statistical Methods in Psychology. These roles, combined with my research on alpha brain activity using EEG technology, allow me to bring a unique, evidence-based perspective to my 9th-grade Algebra I classroom at Benjamin Franklin High School.

My pedagogical approach is deeply informed by my time as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Psychology and Statistical Methods in Psychology. By facilitating breakout sessions and grading technical analysis, I learned to translate complex abstract concepts, such as hypothesis testing and variance, into digestible, actionable insights for students. This foundational experience in higher education, combined with my research in EEG technology, allows me to bring a unique, data-driven perspective to my Algebra I classroom, where I bridge the gap between psychological learning theories and mathematical mastery.

Beyond the classroom, I have experience in geriatric care, customer service, and retail, showcasing adaptability, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills. Whether it's working with youth or supporting research initiatives, I aim to make a positive impact and build lasting connections.

My instructional model is built around a highly structured, gradual release of responsibility framework ("I Do, We Do, You Do") that embeds continuous, heavily reinforced practice into every single class period. Rather than allowing struggling learners to fall behind, my routine uses constant, active touchpoints—such as independent data analysis during the Do-Now, targeted whole-class questioning, and collaborative problem-solving—to keep students constantly engaged with the material. By breaking down our block into discrete, rapid-fire phases, I maximize instructional minutes while providing lower-performing students with multiple opportunities to interact with the same core concepts in different formats, keeping energy high and lowering the barrier to entry. A cornerstone of this structure is the systematic use of spiral review and heavily scaffolded repetition to ensure that foundational skills are permanently reinforced. For example, I do not treat concepts like measures of central tendency as isolated topics; instead, I intentionally loop these exact metrics through successive lessons, bringing them back during vocabulary reviews, graph-construction tasks, and sequential exit tickets to build deep procedural muscle memory. This constant reinforcement is paired with immediate, targeted feedback loops—like my "Yellow Highlighter" strategy and synchronous desk checks during independent work—allowing me to intercept student misconceptions in real time before they solidify. To support students who may not be as strong in the content, this high-volume practice is wrapped in robust, multi-layered linguistic and cognitive accommodations. I proactively lower cognitive fatigue for struggling learners by deploying pre-scaled number lines, visual anchor charts that pair key terms like "frequency" with graphic icons, and bilingual tools. Furthermore, by providing structured sentence frames and accepting labeled sketches or mathematical expressions in place of complex English prose, I isolate and assess a student's actual mathematical processing. This ensures that language-production fatigue never acts as a roadblock to mastering rigorous algebraic standards.
