About Max

In my saxophone studio, I believe true musicianship emerges when technical skill and creative exploration are nurtured in harmony. Each student—whether just starting or refining advanced jazz technique—receives personalized instruction grounded in breath control, embouchure refinement, tone production, finger technique, articulation, and rhythm accuracy. These essential skills enable them to play with musical freedom and confidence. To develop artistic identity, I introduce improvisation early using structured exercises: melodic motif creation, scale-based question-and-answer, and rhythmic phrasing drills that enhance musical intuition. Music theory is seamlessly taught through application—students learn modes, chord structures, and harmonic context as they dissect solos, compose melodies, or improvise over chord changes. Lessons are flavored with repertoire that reflects each student’s passion—classic jazz, soul, pop, blues, or classical themes—ensuring consistent engagement. We set collaborative goals, whether preparing for a recital, audition, jazz combo, or original composition, providing a roadmap for progression. A pivotal teaching moment was witnessing a quiet student transform into an expressive performer, confident enough to lead a small ensemble. Moments like that capture the essence of what teaching saxophone means to me: guiding students to technical proficiency, artistic bravery, and deep musical connection.

I approach saxophone teaching with the mindset that musical growth happens when students are challenged to think, listen, and feel deeply. I start by helping each student build a reliable technique—clean finger transitions, breath control, embouchure flexibility, and dynamic responsiveness—because great ideas need a solid instrument to travel through.

From there, the real fun begins: improvisation, musical storytelling, and self-expression. I incorporate creative exercises such as riff building, trading fours, and solo analysis into every lesson to keep things engaging and empowering. Students don’t just play music; they break it down and rebuild it in their own voice.

We study jazz harmony in a way that connects theory to sound, applying it immediately in standards, blues heads, and original material. I also introduce rhythmic independence and polyrhythmic phrasing for advanced students ready to stretch their timing skills. We transcribe solos not to memorize them, but to mine them for phrasing, tone, and structure. I emphasize creative practice—looping your own grooves, composing with digital audio tools, or layering sax parts to build compositions.

One student started a YouTube channel showcasing their sax covers and improvisations, using skills we developed in lessons on tone blending, phrasing, and performance confidence. Whether you're working toward music school, gigging in a band, or just seeking a deeper connection to music, I design each lesson to keep your goals front and center while exposing you to the limitless range of the saxophone.
