About Sierra

With over 15 years of singing experience, I've explored a wide variety of styles and genres, making me well-equipped to teach students of all ages. I believe that teaching is a two-way street—I learn just as much from my students as they do from me! I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a major in Songwriting and a minor in Music Technology, specializing in Vocal Performance. Now based in Los Angeles, I work as a professional songwriter in the industry. For more serious students, I offer valuable insights into what it takes to succeed, wishing I had someone like that when I was growing up. My passion for teaching is deeply rooted in the support I received from my own teachers, and I’m inspired to provide that same encouragement to others. I love seeing people grow and being part of their journey—it's incredibly rewarding and fun! My songs have earned recognition, including awards from the 2021 Songs for Social Change Contest (showcase), the 2021 Annual Earthapalooza Concert, and back-to-back wins in the Michigan Music Education Association Songwriting Contest. When I’m not immersed in music, I enjoy reading, hiking, spending time with my dog, and exploring great food spots!

About the lesson

Hello! I'm Sierra, a graduate of Berklee College of Music and Los Angeles based songwriter. I have had over 8 years of courses in music theory and deeply understand many of the challenges faced by young musicians trying to learn the subject. In lessons, my primary focus is making music theory usable. Music theory is a tool - rarely the final goal. Working with each student I will develop a personalized plan to help them reach their musical goals through an understanding of music theory. I do not teach classical music theory. Though there are many similarities, I have a jazz theory background and work best with students who play contemporary music styles. These lessons are for you if you're... - looking to brush up on your music theory for an entrance exam or audition to a music school or program - looking for tutoring in AP or IB music - wanting to gain a better understanding of the music you're playing - looking to write songs or compose music If this sounds like you, send me a message!
