About Joe
Joe Turner is a freelance drummer, classical percussionist, and educator residing in North Carolina. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Music Business from Mansfield University where he was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and served as drumline captain of The Spirit and the Pride! Marching Band. Joe recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance from The Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, under the direction of Benjamin Toth, receiving additional private instruction from Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Boccato, vibraphonist Ted Piltzecker, African Percussionist Joe Galeota, and Cuban percussionists John Amira and Marcus Kreiger. Recent affiliations include Roger Daltrey’s live orchestra, the Hanson Brothers’ live orchestra, the Northern Appalachian Wind Symphony, Lycoming Wind Ensemble, Endless Mountain Music Festival, and Bram Wijnands’ jazz trio. Joe has been one of the recent winners of Mansfield University’s concerto competition, and has been a featured soloist with the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and the Endless Mountain Music Festival Orchestra, performing Avner Dorman’s Spices, Perfumes, Toxins! and Russell Peck’s The Glory and the Grandeur, respectively. He has also toured the east coast with multiple bands of varying genres, frequenting residencies in Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Ohio, and more. His experience has led him to perform in notable venues such as the Orpheum Theater, Beacon Theater, and Carnegie Hall. As an educator, Joe has taught private drum set, percussion, and piano lessons; instructed various collegiate drum lines including Shippensburg University and Lock Haven University, and was the percussion instructor at Bristol Eastern High School in Bristol, Connecticut, where he started the award-winning percussion ensemble. Previous instructors include Adam Brennan of Mansfield University, Conrad Alexander of Mansfield University & Ithaca College, and Rich Thompson of The Eastman School of Music. This fall, he will be attending University of North Carolina Greensboro to pursue a Doctorate of Percussion Performance, where he will also be a teaching assistant. Joe proudly endorses Vic Firth and Zildjian.
