About Shantel
I am a math instructor at Eastside House Settlement pursuing a bachelor degree in Fraud Examination & Financial Forensics at John Jay College of Criminal Justice with 2 years experience working with this community-based organization in the South Bronx. This program is designed to help students age 16 - 24 obtain their Highschool Equivalency Diploma. I teach about 15 - 25 students per week to help them sharpen their skills in math. I have been reward by my students who passed the math section of their test with thank you cards, letters, and roses showing their appreciation. These were students who enter the program with low confidence in mathematics and left through the same doors with high confidence.

The methods I use to help students understand the lessons:
1) I use visual examples and stories to explain new concepts.
2) I create known games to make learning math more fun.
3) I have students practice often and provide quizzes just to see if they are understanding the topic.
4) I make students feel comfortable with asking questions.
5) I give students stickers for not only getting questions right but for trying to do a challenging problem or topic.
