About Amber

I have recently graduated from studying Mathematics at Durham University, having done Maths and Further Maths at A-Level and FSMQ Additional Maths alongside my GCSEs. I have been tutoring since I was doing my own A-levels and have tutored both GCSE and A-Level as well as helping in maths lessons of lower secondary school students.
Having been through multiple different stages of studying maths myself in recent years, I am familiar with the current challenges in learning, particularly post-covid. I have a very flexible approach to how I can help with understanding, as I know full well that everyone’s brain works and learns in a different way. I will happily explain the same concept a dozen times in varying ways until we figure out which approach (or multiple) makes the most sense for you.

About the lesson

I will happily make suggestions as to the structure of lessons, but I aim to work around what you find makes learning easier, whether that is bringing problem sheets from class to go over again to fully understand, or refreshing previous topics studied a while ago, or getting a headstart on areas you know you will be covering soon. Please feel free to message me between sessions as well, if you have a quick question or one-off problem you are stuck on! I can send some notes or a work through of a problem with a step-by-step explanation of every part of the thought process, and sometimes an explanation in a slightly different way is enough to help the idea click. If not, I can go through the concept in more depth in a lesson, and can screen-share a problem so you can see in real-time each part of the question worked through and explained methodologically.

Having tutored GCSE and A-Level maths before, and knowing that a common struggle is what exam questions are actually asking of you, I often focus also on how to recognise the wording of the question and adapt your own working to be accessible to examiners. I can work through problems from past papers with you, but alongside this I can write further questions in any specific style that might be more difficult, to allow even more practice, especially when that style of question is difficult to find examples of.

I believe maths is best learnt by understanding a concept first, and then seeing ways it can be applied in practice. I can help with methods and tricks to memorise basic formulae, but I think one of the best ways to memorise things is to use it, and keep trying different problems which slowly help you to recognise when to use different ideas or which formula will help solve it.
