About Ryan
I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2011, and in 2013, I received a master's degree in pure mathematics from Indiana University, Bloomington. I have done original research in the fields of algebraic topology and geometric group theory. My biggest mathematical interests lie at the intersection of differential geometry, dynamical systems, functional analysis, and representation theory of Lie groups. When it comes to lower levels of study, I have developed a method beginning with counting and numerical concepts which approaches arithmetic and elementary algebra in a way that can shore up common gaps in understanding that become problematic later in one's studies.

It is an unfortunate byproduct of the methods usually used in academia for teaching mathematics that students are often left feeling like their best approach to succeeding in a math class is through memorization. The truth is once you start memorizing formulae and algorithmic techniques, you've stopped actually learning mathematics, and from that point you will only fall further and further behind in your understanding. My approach to teaching is highly conceptual and Socratic, and I emphasize the reasoning process over relying on rote regurgitation of memorized steps. Once you understand how the concepts fit together, you will no longer feel the need to memorize.

Perfect! He was great! Knowledgeable, enthusiastic, good-natured, and clear. I feel bad that i can’t work with him any more because of my schedule.
