  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I fell in love with Mathematics at a young age. I’ve always been fascinated by how logical patterns can explain so much about the world around us. My interest in tutoring began when classmates used to ask me for help during study sessions and when my Maths teachers allowed me to teach the class for the first 10 minutes of some lessons. I realised that I genuinely enjoyed breaking down difficult concepts and seeing someone gain confidence. This carried through into my teaching career and naturally extended into private tutoring, where I can support learners more personally and at their own pace.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Mathematics from Key Stage 2 up to A-Level Further Maths and exam preparation. I particularly enjoy algebra, problem-solving, trigonometry, and calculus because they build strong reasoning skills that students can apply anywhere. I also love discussing mathematical misconceptions, helping students realise that mistakes are part of the learning process. If there is a topic I like a little less, it might be lengthy word problems because English is an additional language to me, but even then, I enjoy finding efficient, structured ways to approach them.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes. I had a secondary school teacher, Mr Ndlovu, who believed in me long before I believed in myself. He made Maths feel accessible, fun, and empowering. His patience and high expectations inspired me, and to this day I try to bring that same encouragement and belief to my own students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs patience, subject expertise, and the ability to explain concepts in different ways. Flexibility is key, every learner is unique, so I adapt strategies to suit their needs and strengths. Good tutors also listen carefully, identify gaps quickly, build confidence, and create an environment where students feel safe to try, make mistakes, and keep improving.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my favourite memories is helping a student who believed they were “not a Maths person.” We worked together consistently, using small steps, retrieval practice, and lots of encouragement. Over time their confidence grew, and by exam season they were solving problems independently. They later told me that our sessions completely changed how they saw themselves academically. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching.

Another moment that stands out is from my full-time teaching job. I once told a student about how I used to peer-teach in high school and how explaining a concept to someone else helps you understand it more deeply. Since then, that student often volunteers to peer-teach their classmates. Watching them step up, lead explanations, and reinforce their own learning in the process has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a real reminder of the power of collaboration and confidence in the Maths classroom.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

Maths can be unforgiving—if you miss a small step, the whole question can fall apart. Growing up, I sometimes struggled with exam pressure and overthinking problems. Even now, as a teacher, the challenge is ensuring every student keeps up with the foundations while still stretching the high achievers. But these challenges have shaped my approach: I focus on clarity, structure, and building strong foundations so learners feel secure and confident.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is genuinely my passion. I enjoy seeing students grow academically, emotionally, and in their mindset. I love taking a topic that feels overwhelming and helping students realise, “I can do this.” Beyond Maths, I enjoy educational research and finding evidence based approaches that improve learning and motivation. Helping students become resilient, independent thinkers is incredibly rewarding.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I bring patience, expertise, and genuine care to every session. I adapt my teaching to each learner, use clear explanations, and focus on building confidence as well as knowledge. My school experience allows me to support students with curriculum requirements, exam preparation, and effective revision strategies. Most importantly, I am committed to helping each student progress, not just in grades, but in belief in their own ability. That commitment is what makes me a Superprof.
