About Andrew
I have been a music teacher since 1984, having studied at Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music. I have taught piano and flute (I was flute tutor at Edge Hill University, Liverpool for 7 years), but for the last decade have specialised solely in theory and composition. I use the ABRSM framework and my students have a 100% pass rate and 72% distinction rate. I have also, in the last 12 months, written individual questions, and whole exam papers, for the new ABRSM syllabus, for all grades, but especially for Grade 5, where the demand is greatest.

I use the ABRSM framework to teach theory and composition. I have taught both individuals and small groups, with the vast majority being one-on-one. In the last year, these have of course all been Zoom lessons, which lend themselves really well to music theory and which I greatly enjoy - and which also means I can teach anyone, anywhere in the world! The lessons are usually 45 or 60 minutes, friendly and informal, but also crammed with information and with methods I have devised to simplify the language of music and to help students develop simple ways of learning that language and mastering exam questions. I always set work for the students between lessons and ask for it to be emailed back a day or two before the next lesson so I can mark it in my own time without using up lesson time. I don't charge anything extra for doing this as I prefer to have the maximum lesson time available to both of us (and I enjoy doing the marking - it's great to see the students making progress!).
