About Harrison

I’m a musician, teacher and composer, with a particular interest in the ways different musical traditions approach harmony, melody and structure. My own musical background is fairly broad. I’m primarily a guitarist and have spent a lot of time with jazz and popular music, but I also have a strong grounding in classical harmony and composition, and a particular interest in earlier music.

I studied Music at Cambridge, where composition was a significant part of my degree. I worked both on free composition and on composition in historical styles, including fugue, canon, chorale writing, Renaissance counterpoint and Baroque orchestral writing. I also spent a great deal of time studying harmony and jazz, alongside broader historical and analytical work.

I am a PGCE-trained secondary music teacher who has taught from KS3 through to A-level. I particularly enjoy the intellectual challenge of working through musical problems with other people. There is something much more interesting to me about taking a student's question or idea, and exploring it together, than simply 'delivering' an explanation. I especially enjoy those moments where a discussion leads somewhere unexpected, or where a student arrives at an insight for themselves.

I'm friendly and fairly informal in my teaching, but I take the subject seriously. I want lessons to feel like a conversation between two people who are interested in the same thing, with my experience there to help guide the discussion.

I offer one-to-one online tuition in music theory, harmony, jazz and composition, for GCSE and A-level students, adult learners, and musicians who want to develop their understanding of music.

I like to take a collaborative and individual approach to teaching. Rather than simply lecturing or giving you rules to memorise, I prefer to work through things with you. We can ask questions, try things out, and see where the music takes us. My aim is that you come away not just knowing an answer, but understanding why it works and feeling more able to work things out for yourself.

What we do in a lesson will therefore depend on what you actually want help with. For a GCSE or A-level student, that might mean working through an exam question, harmonising a melody, learning how to analyse and label a score, or discussing a composition. An adult learner might want to understand the harmony in a piece they enjoy, get to grips with jazz theory, or bring along something they have been trying to write. If you are already an experienced musician, we can go much further into whatever interests you.

Composition mentoring:

Composition is a particular interest of mine, and I offer a fairly discussion-based approach to it. This is inspired by the supervision style of my tutors at Cambridge, where the emphasis was often on thinking through ideas together rather than simply being told what the answer was.

If you are working on a composition, you can send me a score, MuseScore file, recording or sketches beforehand. We can then spend the lesson looking at what you are trying to achieve, what you think is working or not working, and what possibilities you might explore next.

I don't want to rewrite your music for you or tell you what it should sound like. Your ideas are the starting point, and my role is to help you develop them and your own musical judgement.

My background:

I am a Cambridge Music graduate and qualified secondary teacher, with an MA (Cantab) and BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Cambridge, as well as a PGCE in Secondary Music with Qualified Teacher Status.

I have taught Music from KS3 to KS5, including GCSE and A-level, and have experience of one-to-one tuition. At Cambridge, my studies included composition, jazz, harmony and historical composition techniques including counterpoint, fugue and chorale writing.

I am also a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, and have a particular interest in jazz and popular music alongside classical and early music.

Lesson length and level:

I offer 60 to 120 minute lessons. An hour works well for a focused question or regular tuition, while longer sessions can be particularly useful for composition, detailed exam work or anything where it is useful to have time to explore an idea properly.

I work with a range of levels. You don't need to be an advanced musician, but I find that lessons work best when you already have some musical experience or, at the very least, something specific that you want to understand, solve or develop.

The first 30 minutes are free, so we can discuss what you're looking for, look at some of your existing work, and decide whether my approach is a good fit for you. I look very forward to meeting you!
