About Skye
I graduated with honors from GVSU in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and communication studies. After taking a few years off of school, I went back and completed a doctorate of audiology from GVSU in 2023. During my time at GVSU, I worked in the Speech Lab for a total of 5 years where I tutored students on public speaking elements. During my time there, I participated in the National Association of Communication Centers Conference, and won the Huddy-Gunn Graduate Paper Award for my research on managing public speaking apprehension. I additionally served as the Graduate Student Director for a year.

When it comes to public speaking, it is more than just getting in front of a crowd and saying some words. The root of public speaking comes down to the structure of the speech. Similar to paper writing, speeches can take on many different structures, depending on the topic choice and the purpose of the speech. If you are trying to persuade an audience, that speech will look a lot different than if you were trying to inform an audience or if you were trying to speak during a celebration such as a wedding or a graduation. The beauty of public speaking and speech writing is that once you understand the foundation and the structures, it is not only easier to write a speech, but it is easier to give a speech. When preparing a speech, the goal is not to memorize the speech, it is instead to understand the structure and the elements so deeply that you can confidently speak on your topic with very few notes and without memorization. A confident speaker is not one who has memorized every word, instead it is a speaker who is so comfortable with their speech that if their speech becomes derailed or distracted, it is easy to pick up where they left off. My lessons focus on these key elements rather than focusing on one speech or assignment. After my lessons, students should have the confidence and skill set to not only deliver excellent speeches in the classroom, but also in their personal and professional life for years to come.
