About Kyla

I became aware of my 'calling' at age 11 & have spent my entire life involved in education. I've had the privilege of teaching thousands of students in mainly grades 3-7 for 40 years. I have a B.S. in Education degree with a Reading Specialization and a 30-unit Math Supplement to my Credential (like a Minor). Only 3% of K-12 teachers have National Board Certification, which is recognized by & has qualified me to teach in all 50 states without further training. I have held leadership roles in STEM subjects throughout my career, mentoring/training colleagues at the local, county & state level. My student's testing scores have been consistently high due to my level of training, extensive experience, creativity, passion & sincere interest in my students as individual people.

About the lesson

Having spent the majority of my career in the 'middle grades'-3-7, I truly understand young people in this age group- their capabilities & potential, reasonable expectations for progress, common challenges & known best practices to remedy. Parents are key to my approach; I want to hear about their child & enjoy a partnership that is mutually beneficial.
I have several methods with which to address all skills & areas of need. Decades of teaching has led me in search of alternatives to every method presented in traditional textbooks because students are All Different & Learn in Different Ways. Throughout my long history with all types of learners- Gifted (some with dual diagnoses), those who find success in school, but struggle with Math, to students with Learning Disabilities. I am adept at diagnosis of various learning opportunities by paying attention to subtle cues, asking questions & providing a safe atmosphere in which to explore & make mistakes. I pay attention to a child's learning style-is he/she mainly a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner? I understand that the brain's capacity for abstract thought is developing during the middle grades of school & a student’s journey on that continuum is key to teaching to a child's proper level. I make use of Hands-On Math Manipulatives-often referred to as 'teaching from the concrete to the abstract' as warranted. I am child-centered; an example being that I routinely inject student names into humorous word problems that can make an oft-dreaded part of Math more relevant & enjoyable. I am comfortable in my own knowledge & relationships with students, which frees me up to be personable, funny & warm. Notes from students & parents most often mention my caring nature to ensure students understand even the most complex concepts and that I make them laugh. Yes, Math can be fun. :)
