About Joshua

Hi students! I'm 35, I'm a fun teacher who wants to help you pull away from the old style of repeating what the teacher said for a whole hour. I've worked for ILAC Vancouver, LaSalle College/Languages Across Borders, VanWest College, Sprott-Shaw, and Vancouver Community College helping students find their future. I hold a CELTA degree from Cambridge Online, and have been teaching ESL since 2008. Working in Vancouver means that students will already need to take a big risk and travel to us, but I see that many students want to learn remote. Because of this, I want to offer my services online! Perfect for: - moving to an English-speaking country (Canada and USA especially) - teaching English in a non-English-speaking country - performing bilingual services (hospitality, medicine, airline steward, customer service) - learning English casually

About the lesson

What sets me apart is that I have both: 1. knowledge and phrases which are used normally by native speakers of North American English. 2. strong background in explaining and teaching that content. I have a backlog of 70 hour-long lessons about vowel sounds which are challenging for speakers of other languages. For example, for students from Japan, R/L distinction and pronouncing the 'see' sound can be very challenging. I will give sentences with the target sound to first assess student abilities, then use diagrams of the tongue and teeth to identify how the English sound is different from familiar sounds from their language, there is time to practice and discuss these sounds using homophones and homonyms, and finally, we end the hour with repeated practice of the most difficult words. For most students, pronouncing the English vowel in 'book' is a challenge, for speakers of Korean, G/K and F/V distinction, for Portuguese and Spanish speakers 'seat/sit' and 'th' sounds. What sets me apart is my wide knowledge of other languages, and ability to filter what information will be MOST effective, rather than repeating the same lessons for every student. I promise not to waste your time with something you're already good at. Students who want to use their English in Customer Service or Hospitality fields can especially benefit from my skills, but I'm able to make lessons for entry-level English all the way to English proficiency tests like the EIKEN, IELTS, TOEFL, CELPIP, TOEIC, Cambridge, and OET tests.
