About Joss

I am a native English speaker, graduate of English Literature (MA Hons) from the University of Edinburgh. I have a diverse and nuanced experience of teaching English as a foreign language in several countries. From teaching dramatic English to deaf and blind children at the age of fourteen, to voluntary teaching and placement tutoring in Romania at age 18, to finally obtaining an ESL teaching post in Shanghai in 2018, I have explored several ways and Methods of teaching English as a second language. During my placement in China, a teaching agency placed me in a large number of state schools throughout the city. I have taught students from 6 to 18 years old, while maintaining a mentoring position along with regular theater productions. I am familiar with both the use of national curriculum materials and the creation of my own from scratch to convey an intercultural education for my students, taking advantage of the differences and similarities that close the gaps between Western and Eastern cultures, which means that Language learning is so important! I am a teacher who likes to explore various methods and apply various methodologies to make language learning a dynamic and enjoyable experience that is not based on a direct method. Every student is different and, from now on, every student deserves the opportunity to improve their language skills.

About the lesson

Learning English with me will be a dynamic experience that will not depend on textbooks. Conversational practice helps reveal gaps in our vocabulary and reveals some of the hidden errors in our grammar. My classes will be based on topics, discussion-centered sessions that will stimulate all areas of language learning through current events, the media or will be tailored specifically to your interests. It is much easier to improve your language skills when you talk about areas that you are passionate about, my teaching approach offers the flexibility to improve in a relaxed and friendly environment. In addition, I specialize in tutoring for literature students or those with a particular interest in literature, since I have a master's degree in English literature from the University of Edinburgh. Learning English with me will be a dynamic experience that does not rely on the tried and tested textbook methods. Conversational practice helps to reveal the gaps in our vocabulary and unveil some of the hidden mistakes in our grammar. My classes will be topic based, discussion focused sessions that stimulate all areas of language learning through the medium of current events, to media, or tailored specifically to your interests. It is much easier to perfect your language skills when discussing areas you are passionate about, my teaching approach offers the flexibility to improve where you feel you need to improve in a relaxed and friendly environment. I also specialize in tutoring for literature students or those with a particular interest in literature, as I hold a Masters degree in English Literature from Edinburgh University.
