About Joe

I am a medical student with a background in neuroscience. I completed my bachelor's in neuroscience in 2018 and am currently taking a year out from my medical studies to pursue a master's degree in neuroimaging.

I have a strong passion for science and love to share this with young learners. I have tutored many students previously and have met some brilliant young scientists. It is a privilege to see my students achieve the goals we work toward together and go on to pursue new and exciting opportunities beyond school.

About the lesson

Through my previous tutoring experience I have found that students learn in many different ways and not everyone will respond to the same methods. This is why I feel it is so important to be flexible in my approach and tailor my lessons to suit the students’ individual needs. I like to establish key goals with my students from the outset that we can work towards and develop as they learn and progress. During our first meeting we will have the chance to discuss what you are looking for in a tutor and develop an action plan to maximise your learning.

During our sessions, I typically like to start by reviewing material that we covered during the previous lesson and testing you out with some example questions. This allows us to really cement that knowledge and put it into practice. I find that this is a great foundation for the lesson which we can build on to develop and grasp future ideas more efficiently.

At this stage we can start to cover new topics. I usually like to break the material down into sections based on the exam board syllabus and set out the key concepts that you need to know. We can discuss things that you have covered during your school lessons and identify any areas where you may need some extra support to develop your understanding. We will also cover completely new topics to give you a head start in the classroom.

Once you feel confident with the concepts I like to work through some exam-style questions with you. This allows you to practice applying what we have learnt and become familiar with the exam format. Good exam technique is paramount to achieving high grades and as such I like to focus on how best to structure your answers to really show off your knowledge and maximise marks.

Finally, I like to finish the session with a quick summary of what we have gone through and sometimes include a fun activity related to the topic to wrap up.

Throughout our sessions I hope you will feel encouraged and confident to ask questions and challenge yourself. I firmly believe that every question is a good question and that having the confidence to get things wrong is what allows us to grow and improve. I look forward to working with you and fostering a passion for science which you can carry forward into your future studies/careers.
