About Nicolle

I get to do what I love- teaching students to fall in love with their music on the violin and viola- every day! It's pretty incredible!

I graduated in Viola Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. After completing teacher training with the Suzuki Association of America, I've been teaching privately for the past 18 years.

When I'm not busy with my music, I love to travel, scuba dive, and spend time with my family and our Bullmastiff.

About the lesson

I always love to get to know my new students and their parents, when age appropriate, over the phone and by having them observe a group and private lesson. This gives each of us an opportunity to get to know each other and have a better idea of what to expect when working together.

Each of my students is different and each comes with a different unique level of experience. For brand new students that have never played the violin or viola before, we go on a shopping trip and I help you find an instrument! I like to begin learning through the Suzuki Method and we learn both to read music and play by ear.

For more advanced students, we focus on more advanced technique including scales, arpeggios, etudes, and more advanced classical and non-classical pieces.

I have worked with students of all ages- as young as 4 years old and as old as 70. I work with students who have a great attitude, love to learn, and are committed to their growth and success.

Getting to know your teacher, and having them get to know you, is SO important! Music is about more than just notes; it's also about connection. A great teacher will help you to connect with others through your music. But, a great teacher also has to be able to connect with you! So, get to know your teacher and get comfortable with each other.

Some students are afraid to ask questions because... they don't know what questions to ask! Understandable. A great teacher will not only answer your questions but should also be able to anticipate the questions you don't know to ask and guide you through them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out...

-Why do YOU want to play the violin or viola? (YOU. Not your parent.)

-After your teacher works with you, are you willing and able to practice as much as they recommend to get better? (This one is big! Many students commit to lessons before they realize that they are too busy with dance, soccer, school, social lives, etc. to have the time to practice. A great teacher will expect their students to practice. And a student that wants to progress will need to make the time for that practice.)

-Do you have any music goals? (Ex. I want to play duets with my brother who also plays the violin. I have always been shy and want to learn to perform confidently without being afraid. I want to join my community orchestra.)

This is a question for the parents... Parents, if your child is young (~12 years old and younger), they will likely need your support and help when practicing. Are YOU able and willing to help your child to make this a wonderful experience?

Perfect! Nicolle is absolutely fantastic! She greets us every lesson with a big smile and really cares about my daughter outside of violin. She sees her as a whole person and is often throwing in life lessons along with violin skills. She is warm, friendly, funny, and works hard to make meaningful connections with my daughter. I really appreciate her focus on proper technique, which will really set my daughter up for success. She is incredibly skilled in teaching and always has an idea up her sleeve to help with this or that. She is creative, fun, and we just love Nicolle! Truly couldn't ask for a better violin teacher.

Perfect! We are so thankful for Miss Nicolle giving our 7 year old daughter the opportunity to learn to play violin in the comfort of our home! Our family is in a very demanding season so the online lessons has made it possible and sustainable for us.
Miss Nicolle was very helpful during the process of starting as we were very new to this about 6 months ago. She went above and beyond helping us locate a string shop to rent the violin from which was super helpful.
It has been easier than I imagined to help our daughter with her lessons. The instruction videos are easy to follow and very motivating for kids. She is very good at teaching the students but also guiding/ teaching parents how to better help as parents are most likely new to this like me. Miss Nicolle is very encouraging and energizing in both the videos and in her lessons. Often includes games in lessons which is very engaging for the kids. She is supportive and understanding during moments of frustration and she continues to instill confidence and courage in our daughter which has been fun to see. Miss Nicolle pushes just enough to provide challenge and instill growth in our daughter each week. You can tell she has lots of experience working with kids because she is very good at it even in challenging situations. :)
