About Adrian
Hello! My name is Adrian, and I'm a second year honours human physiology specialist student at the University of Toronto. Having found great pleasure in my biology classes, and realizing that explaining things is (for better or for worse...) one of my strong suits, I'd love to help others understand and love biology (of all sorts) as much as I do!
I've tutored formally and informally for years. For the past few months, I've been involved in a volunteer tutoring program called The Saturday Program, where I've had the opportunity to apply my problem-based approach in teaching grade 12 math and chemistry. Otherwise, I've worked informally with countless colleagues in all sorts of subjects (including biology) to help them better understand material in the classes I took.
Aside from my specialist program, I hold an International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification in biology, having achieved a grade of 7 (the highest possible). Outside the classroom, I'm deeply involved in the clinical sector as well as a number of grassroots. Having spent 3 years working and volunteering in acute care hospitals, I've had the amazing opportunity to witness biology in action - and I'd love to share that.

I consider myself a problem and application-based tutor/teacher. Academic research on teaching and learning suggests that most students don't always learn well when simply talked to; they learn best when they engage with material. I've found that this is true for me too, as a student! For that reason, I approach subjects flexibly, and try to connect the theory students are learning to real-life. In biology, that would mean helping students work through real-world phenomena; for example, in a class on nervous system physiology, I might use the example of a bullet ant sting to illustrate and integrate how the different ion channels in neurons work. For that example, I'd give students hints or tips where necessary, but let them work through the example themselves, with my guidance.
To that end, I avoid simply lecturing. If students need an explanation or hint, I am happy to provide one - but I see myself as a guide, not a lecturer.
A typical class for me starts with a light-hearted introduction (we're people before students!), followed by the student(s) indicating the material they'd like covered. I do not teach in a prescriptive manner - only what students want or need. From that point, I might do a wide variety of things to better student understanding - perhaps explaining textbook/class material further, illustrating an example, or solving problems or data-based questions.
I teach at the high school level and introductory (first/second year) university level. I am more than happy to teach more advanced high school biology, such as AP or IB higher level biology.
