About Alex

I am a pianist, keyboardist, and composer based in London, performing and recording across a range of genres, primarily jazz and improvised music. In addition to my career as a music and piano teacher, I have performed across the UK and Europe as a bandleader and ensemble member, at venues including Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, The Vortex Jazz Club, 606 Jazz Club, Love Supreme Festival, London Jazz Festival, Jazzkaar Festival Estonia, La Petite Halle Paris, Brick Lane Jazz Festival and many more.

Since meeting award-winning choreographer Mthuthuzeli November in 2022, I have written several works for the stage and contributed recorded and composed material for production soundtracks. Notable pieces include my orchestral score for For What It's Worth (Royal Opera House, Royal Ballet, premiering February 2024), Water Me for string quartet and percussion (Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Spring 2024), and recorded piano for NINA: By Whatever Means (Barbican Theatre, Linbury Theatre ROH, Ballet Black).

I studied music at Oxford University (2016-19) where he performed widely in classical and jazz contexts and was invited to perform in masterclasses with Yo Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis, and the Villiers Quartet.

I went on to study a performance MA at the Royal Academy of Music (2020-22). While at the Academy, I was awarded the Scott Philbrick Jazz Prize for outstanding postgraduate performance, Universal Music UK Sound Foundation sponsorship and the Countess of Munster Postgraduate Award.

I am a professional pianist and composer, graduate of the Royal Academy of Music (MA) and Oxford University (BA) offering lessons in music theory across all styles. I currently teach at St. John's College Oxford as a course tutor and have many years' experience of private music tuition. A great range of musical styles and genres informs my approach to music theory, which is extremely broad and not tied to any one mode of thinking in particular. I believe this is crucial for anyone wishing to improve their understanding of music theory. There is no way of learning a singular theory of music. Instead, there are commonalities across musical types and forms that can be seen as musical fundamentals worthy of understanding.

In my lessons I look to apply the knowledge I have of a diverse range of music to understanding theory, as I believe this is the most thorough way of getting to grips with musical basics. Harmony and tonality in particular are crucial theoretical concepts to become familiar with and form a large amount of my teaching. Getting to grips with stylistic features is also a key objective. Crucially, my lessons look always to reinforce the idea that music theory is a practical tool not an abstract concept. I always aim, therefore, to relate any theoretical area to a concrete musical example across any genre. I believe any good theory teacher should be able to show how a theoretical idea operates, not just what it looks like!

I am very happy to assist anyone preparing for theory examinations.
My degree course engaged with music theory far above ABRSM grade 8 level, so I feel I am well qualified to help with these exams.
