About Kristin

I have been teaching off and on for the last 22 years. My first introduction to teaching was in a school for children with special needs run by the Leo Club in Penang, Malaysia.
After that, I was an early childcare teacher for a while before pursuing a degree at Massey University in Palmerston North. While studying at Massey, I've also worked part time as a maths and science tutor for students in high school and first year Uni students doing Calculus. Upon graduation, I've worked as a research technician but have continued to tutor my own kids and a couple of neighbourhood kids nearby.
I enjoy tutoring as it gives me great satisfaction to see the expression on my student's face when they have managed to understand a concept that has eluded then for ages or when they have achieved improvement in a subject. It is a great motivation for myself to continue tutoring

About the lesson

- As per my job description, the subjects that I tutor will be in maths and school sciences.
- To tailor a lesson plan to your level, I will need to know your current ability. This can be done via a first Q&A session with myself, a snapshot of your esATTle report, or even some written tests. This will give me an idea of where to start, which parts of the subject you are confident in and what needs to be improved.
- I will also need to understand your goals: do you want me to support your schoolwork? Do you want me to push ahead school level in advance? Or do you want me to help catch up to an expected level?
- A typical lesson length will be 30mins to 45mins long, depending on your needs and level.
- My lessons will adhere to NZ curriculum as a support for your workings in school. I'm also available to teach you in parallel with NZ curriculum if you want to do another curriculum, i.e. Singapore Maths.
- I am a great supporter of practice, so I will hand out homework. Homework can be handed in during class and we can go through some questions that you find challenging or unsure about.
- Fully marked homework will only be returned the week after and we will go through all errors during the next class.
- My teaching methods may not be how a student learns effectively so I will try to change depending on the situation as everyone is different. If we see no improvement after a period of time, I will want to talk to the student again to see if things need to be re-assessed. My policy is that if I cannot help you, don't waste your time and money on me, find another tutor that matches up with your learning method because that is when the learning happens.
