About Sharleen

Hi! I'm Sharleen. I completed my Biology Bachelor's of Science Degree magna cum laude in 2012, and am in the process of completing a PhD degree in biology. I have closely instructed over 50 undergraduate students at multiple universities, elementary-aged children, as well as two kids of my own, within the last 15 years. During college, I tutored biology, organic chemistry, and American sign language for the Learning Center; I was also a Teacher's Assistant for biology and biochemistry labs. I worked in biological research after college, with experiences ranging from zebrafish development to fruit fly evolution. During my time, I mentored and taught over 25 undergraduate students. After 8 years of working in research, I started pursuing a PhD program in Biology where I currently very closely mentor 1 undergraduate, and have been a Teacher's Assistant for large Cell Biology and Biochemistry classes. I love doing science outreach in my community, and have been a part of local groups volunteering in elementary schools for 4 years. Part of my love of science shows up in my art; I love to translate my science research into pieces of art. This skill also helps me understand parts of biology, and convey it to others. Besides instructing biology, I have also received tutoring in the past for various subjects, so I understand first-hand how it feels to be on the other side of the table, so to speak. Through all of these experiences, I have a vast range of practical and academic knowledge and skills that I'm looking forward to using to help others.

I believe the key to effectively teaching biology (or any subject) to any age group is to get them interested in the material by giving real-world examples, and providing the structure for them to become the master of that material.

During sessions, I actively encourage creative and inquisitive thinking. When instructing, and learning myself, I find that critical thinking helps to deepen and lock in understanding. How are we supposed to learn when we are simply given the information, with no way to personalize it?! My primary goal is to help you learn material by empowering you to take ownership over it.

To begin, I like to get to know my students and assess your understanding of the subject and learning style before delving into the material. From there, we will work together to set concrete (SMART) goals based on what your learning objectives are. I enjoy organization and setting exact dates for plans, etc., but I can be flexible depending on life situations.

These lessons are for anyone really, depending on what your goals are: high school biology, college-level biology, or a refresher course before going back to school. Besides basic biology, I am also equipped to instruct molecular biology and cell biology.
