About William
Mathematics can be fun if you want to make it fun. It gets easier as you improve your skills. I have many years of experience teaching, coaching, tutoring, lecturing, being a professor and advising students of all different ages and genders. Everyone who wants to improve is important to me. I earned my PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Virginia. I taught at Columbia University in New York for 8 years and returned to tutoring and lecturing later in life most recently for 6 years at Barry University in Miami, FL. I have also coached athletes and I find the same thing motivates Mathematics students as athletes: fun and smiling when you get better at something and you can see the difference.

My teaching methods and techniques are simple: I like to use loads of examples and collaborate with my student(s) to think up examples for themselves. A typical lesson plan is topic first. The idea behind it. Examples of how it works. Interpretation of the processes and answers. Then finally the rule or the theory behind it. What separates me from most tutors is that I never start with theory -- it means nothing to most students and confuses them. I give them a problem to solve and help them through it. Finally I back into the rule or concept or theory to its motivated. The lessons are for anyone who wants to improve their skills in mathematics from middle schoolers to graduate level PhD students.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Studying for 'A' levels in the UK with the intention of moving on to University to study science courses, my children benefited massively from the experience and teaching techniques of William.
William took the time to explain things in several ways until they grasped methods and were able to understand and solve problems presented to them.
Both surpassed the grades their schools expected of them, and as a result, both moved on to University courses. My son has now finished university, and my daughter has just begun her course in Biochemistry.
I can highly recommend William for his exceptional teaching skills and passion for mathematics. His clear explanations and dedication to helping my kids succeed have also led to a significant improvement in my own understanding of maths.William and I received our PhD degrees together in Applied Mathematics at the University of Virginia and we have known each other since. William has had an excellent career using his mathematics education and skills and has learned how to break down potentially difficult topics into easy-to-understand basics, culminating in his previous role as Dean at a college at which he created and evaluated lesson plans and lectures that his students were very happy with. He is personable, friendly, funny and patient and has taught me several topics over the years to my great satisfaction, and will be sure to put you at your ease and help you make progress.
I have had the pleasure of knowing William Russell for the better part of 25 years and consider him a friend, confidant and mentor. I have trusted him to teach/tutor/mentor both of my children in both mathematics and science. Both children took to his methods straight away and excelled in their course work. Thank you Bill, you get too marks in my book!
Bill is not only incredibly knowledgeable in mathematics, he also has working knowledge of practical applications of mathematics in the workplace, which is invaluable.
Also a cracking motivator with a brilliant sense of humor.
