About Benjamin

I have studied Latin extensively for about fifteen years. I received a BA in Classical Studies with an emphasis in classical languages at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. I took the equivalent of eight semesters of Classical Latin, including four at the advanced level. I completed an MA in Classics with an emphasis in Philology at the University of Arizona in 2015. I also taught a semester of introductory Latin and I served as a Teaching Assistant for an intensive summer course in Introductory Ancient Greek at Arizona.

After completing my MA, I worked as a Latin Subject Expert Teacher at BASIS Phoenix Charter School from 2015-2017. I taught Latin to grades seven through twelve, which included AP Latin. In this position, I combined instruction in Latin grammar and vocabulary with the study of Roman history and culture. In both years I had students received gold medals in the American National Latin Exam. I also co-published a translation and commentary on the Latin manuscript The Flower of Battle, a 14th century manual on Italian sword-fighting.

I currently hold a PhD in the Classics track of the department of Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East at the University of British Columbia. I have also worked as an independent Latin tutor for beginner and university-level students. I currently work as a Latin tutor for a private education company and the Burnaby public school system.

Not only do I have extensive experience with academic writing, but as a graduate teaching assistant, I have extensive experience teaching and editing academic writing for my students.

About the lesson

The study of Latin should involve both deductive and inductive learning. A strong foundation in Latin vocabulary and the rules of Latin grammar and scansion are necessary for any student. At more advanced levels, students should develop a more holistic understanding of the language and should be able to understand and translate sentences without having to parse each word.
Whenever students struggle with a sentence, I encourage them to focus on the main verb and subject and to tackle each clause separately.

I teach students to understand the historical and cultural background of the texts and I encourage thematic analysis through Socratic discussion. As a Teaching Assistant, I have taught many students to craft well-structured arguments based on textual evidence and an understanding of historical and cultural context.
