About Arsalan
I am a Research Scientist at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in central London, where I work with machine learning, statistical modelling and data to address scientific and healthcare research questions.
I hold Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD qualifications in Computer Engineering and Artificial Intelligence from Sharif University of Technology. I have worked in academia since completing my Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence in 2011, with experience spanning university teaching, research, student supervision, programming and applied data analysis.
Probability has been an important part of my academic work for many years. It provides much of the mathematical foundation for statistics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, so I teach it not only as a collection of equations, but as a way of reasoning about uncertainty. I particularly enjoy helping students understand concepts such as conditional probability, random variables and probability distributions that can initially appear abstract.
Teaching has always accompanied my research career. I have taught and supported university students as well as younger students who wanted to strengthen their mathematical and computational knowledge. My experience as both a programmer and an academic has taught me to be patient and to explain the same idea from different perspectives until the student genuinely understands it.
My own academic journey began with Iran’s highly competitive national university entrance examination, KonKoor, in which I ranked 633 nationally among more than 450,000 applicants and gained admission to Sharif University of Technology.
My aim as a tutor is not simply to help students obtain the correct answer. I want them to understand why an approach works, recognise which probability concepts apply to a new problem, and gradually become confident enough to solve unfamiliar problems independently.

My Probability lessons are designed to help students understand the reasoning behind probability rather than simply memorising formulae. I explain each concept step by step and connect mathematical definitions to intuitive examples, diagrams, worked problems and, where useful, applications in statistics, data science and machine learning.
Depending on the student’s level, lessons can cover topics such as conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem, independence, random variables, probability distributions, expectation and variance, covariance, the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem and other topics required by their course.
I normally begin by identifying the student’s current understanding and the areas causing difficulty. We then work through concepts together before moving to carefully selected problems. I encourage students to explain their reasoning rather than simply give an answer, because this makes misunderstandings much easier to identify and correct.
A typical lesson lasts 60–90 minutes. Lessons can be tailored around a school or university syllabus, examination preparation, coursework, or strengthening the mathematical foundations needed for statistics, machine learning and data science.
I hold a PhD and a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering with a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and work as a Research Scientist at UCL. Probability and statistics have been fundamental throughout my academic and research career, particularly in machine learning, statistical modelling and data analysis.
My lessons are suitable for A-Level students, undergraduate and postgraduate university students, and adult learners who need a stronger understanding of probability for mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics or data science.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Arsalan was my tutor when I was working on my PhD dissertation. His very in-depth knowledge of mathematics and machine learning helped me enormously in understanding the theory behind the methods I needed to develop my ideas in machine learning for finance. One of the most valuable things I learned from him was how to frame a real-world problem in a way that can be modelled using machine learning algorithms. He has a strong ability to explain complex concepts clearly and connect mathematical theory with practical applications.
Arsalan is also a very patient and supportive tutor. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn machine learning from the ground up or develop a deeper understanding of the subject.Arsalan is very friendly, warm and great at explaining really complex terms and processes. He is the go-to person for all machine learning problems.
