About Paul
Hi, I’m Paul McCurdy — a pianist, teacher, and recent (and very happy!) transplant to New York City. For over 20 years I’ve worked as a collaborative pianist, teacher, and coach with universities, choirs, theaters, and music schools across San Francisco and beyond. I’ve performed with groups like Sacred & Profane, Volti, and the SF Choral Society, and taught piano at the University of San Francisco and the Community Music Center. Along the way I recorded an album of Mozart’s sonatas, accompanied countless singers and instrumentalists, and helped students of all ages discover their own voice at the piano.
While my roots are in the classical tradition, my current passions are jazz, improvisation, composition, and musical creativity in all forms. Now based in Manhattan, I’m excited to build new musical connections and share the joy of playing piano with students here.

I call myself a "recovering" classical pianist. I had a strict musical upbringing with a tough, narrow teacher, and it took me years to rediscover joy, curiosity, and creativity at the piano. That experience shapes everything I do as a teacher: my number one priority is helping students feel free, supported, and inspired.
I especially love working with:
• Adults and teenagers who are brand-new beginners
• People returning to piano after years away
• Anyone who had a tough or discouraging early experience with music
• Students who want to explore improvisation, songwriting, or jazz
• Classical players who want to dig into the beauty and depth of the repertoire
No matter your background, our lessons will be sensitive, encouraging, and tailored to you. My goal is to help you not only play the piano, but also express yourself through music.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Paul is a wonderful musician and teacher. He’s very patient with people of all ages. Highly recommend him!
Paul is a thoughtful, patient, and dedicated piano teacher, accompanist, and musician. I worked with Paul for four years, during high school from ages 13-17. He always made the members of our choir feel confident about the music and comfortable taking risks. I highly recommend Paul as a music instructor, you will be in good hands.
Paul is an exceptional pianist, educator, and mentor. I've had the pleasure of working with Paul while he was teaching at the University of San Francisco, where he grew our Piano Studio to over 20 students, served as our primary collaborative pianist for the University Choir, and graciously extended his time to mentor students. I have also had the privilege of collaborating directly with Paul, where we worked on a piece by Clara Schumann. His attention to detail and nuanced approach to guiding our rehearsals was excellent. Highly recommend Paul!
Paul is one of the most well rounded musicians anywhere. It is his rare gift to play beautifully and also be able to teach others to play. I highly recommend Paul as a teacher.
Paul McCurdy is without a doubt your best choice for a music teacher and accompanist. Paul was my accompanist for several choirs at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco and was always a consummate professional; on time, prepared, and forever a team player.
As a piano teacher, Paul is kind and effective. He draws techniques from classical, jazz and musical theater, providing his students with an array of options to improve their methods.
I highly recommend Paul and would love nothing more than to work with him again!
I worked as a choir and voice teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area for 10 years. During that decade, Paul generously served as the collaborative pianist for most of the ensembles I directed and voice students I taught at the high school and collegiate levels. His musical prowess and artistry was always exceptional, while his rapport and compassion for students was inspiring. I am now an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Purdue University, and everyday I continue to miss Paul’s generosity, kindness, collaborative nature, and fine musicianship.
I have worked with Paul for the last 20 years in the San Francisco Bay area. He has been a collaborative pianist for my private studio working with students as young as five years old and as old as 70 he's great with all levels and styles of students. He was much more than a collaborative pianist and a co-educator. Explaining concepts clearly in a language that students could understand. Very friendly my students always enjoyed working with him the Bay Area has lost a great pianist, New York. You're very lucky! Definitely if you get a chance to work with Paul- do it!
