About Heloisa

I am an experienced Portuguese teacher and trained phonetician, who specialises in pronunciation and accent reduction lessons for students with Portuguese as a second language.

I work as a Portuguese teacher privately and for several language schools, having experience with one-to-one and group lessons; beginners, intermediate, advanced and proficiency levels, present tuition and online tuition via Skype; teaching children from the age of 2; MYP and Diploma curriculum; general training and Portuguese for business purposes.

I have been teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language for 20 years, and now specialise in teaching pronunciation of the Portuguese accent (both from Brazil and Portugal). Using an evidence-based method I have helped many students achieve a more neutral native-sounding Portuguese accent. This builds their confidence in speaking situations and enables them to understand and be understood by others more clearly.

I offer: one-to-one online lessons. I provide the following Portuguese courses:

General Portuguese

Focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking through a range of different topics and issues.

Practical Portuguese

Practical, everyday Portuguese, for example - going to the Doctor, booking a holiday, going shopping etc.

Academic Portuguese

Assistance with essay structure, referencing, proofreading and general study support for those at school/college/university.

Business Portuguese

Portuguese for work: assistance with presentations, how to interact in meetings, how to speak to your employer and colleagues, communicating on the telephone, sending emails etc.

Exam preparation

If students have other requests, I am happy to accommodate these and incorporate them into a course designed especially for the individual.

About the lesson

Lesson topics include:

- Vowel and consonant sounds - how to produce each of the sounds used in Portuguese, and how to choose the correct ones

- Rhythm and stress in phrases and sentences

- Strong and weak forms

- Linking words together / connected speech

- Silent letters and spelling rules

Your first lesson will include a comprehensive assessment of your strengths and needs, and your course will be designed and tailored to you. Following your assessment I will provide feedback on the strengths and goals identified, and a suggested course plan based on these.
