About Joshua
I have an Honours degree in Music at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. I have experience with teaching Music Theory (up to roughly ABRSM Grade 5) in class contexts, but will also teach individually. In addition, I have a passion for Music History and am willing to assist with exam revisions for that subject.

I believe in a systematic and holistic approach towards teaching. Music, while a fascinating discipline, can often be confusing, especially when more complex concepts such as rhythm and harmony are rushed over. I believe in systematically breaking down a concept to its barest basics and making sure those essentials are fully understood before putting them together. Furthermore, I believe that any topic taught in Music should always be contextualised with respect to its counterpart in other subdisciplines. For instance, I am of the opinion that any discussion on tonal music is incomplete without having some contextual knowledge of Western classical music between the 16th and 20th centuries and its canon of composers.
In addition I also take interest in more specialised topics, such as World Music, Film Music and Video Game Music and might be willing to incorporate them into my Music History tutorials in future, provided sufficient interest. The aim with these topics is to make available a wider, interdisciplinary scope of knowledge that isn't necessarily limited to Western art music.
However, it must be remarked that I am still a teacher in training and this is my first foray into teaching on a freelance basis without the help of an already established syllabus. I am, however, committed to being receptive to criticism and improving the student's experience through familiarising myself with as much teaching literature and research as possible.
