About Helina
I am currently a primary school teacher with a BA HONS in Primary education with QTS. My specialist subjects are English and Autism.
I have experience of working with children with profound multiple learning disabilities and multi sensory impairments.
I am highly driven and enthusiastic and can effectively plan and teach all the foundation and core subjects. These subjects are highly important to a child’s core development and children with special educational needs, PMLD and MSI also greatly benefit from play based sensory learning, which I incorporate in all my lessons.
I have also undertaken a team teach qualification, and I am up to date with all the current training such as moving and handling, eating and drinking guidelines, multi sensory impairment, safeguarding, communication, health and safety alongside equal opportunities. I have also carried out assessments on children to determine the level they are working at using p scales, pivats, baseline, EYFS and have also attended reviews (annual) (LAC) with various multi agencies such as care, speech therapists, physiotherapists and nurses. I am a great advocate of intensive Interaction and sensory Integration and I have seen the benefits of carrying out these methods and have achieved fantastic results.
I am also able to speak and understand multiple languages such as Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi which has been essential for communicating with parents and children who do not speak English or have English as an additional language.
I am very strong on working with parents and their wishes. I have even had parents come in to observe my lessons with their child and have been over the moon with the progression.
I have completed my teaching qualification in primary however I have experience in all the key stages working with children from early years to transition (post 16) and I feel comfortable in all areas. I have experienced continuous provision in early years and I can confidently plan lessons for children of that age and upwards.
I have worked closely with children with cerebral palsy, retts syndrome, autism/ autistic tendencies, angelmans and many others. I have researched a lot of information on these conditions so I have a good understanding of the children I am working with.
Communication comes in many forms and I am able to use Makaton and PECS. I can also use advanced technology such as dyna vox (AAC), switches and big macks. Working with children with MSI and PMLD I have mainly used personalised learning and child centred approaches alongside group activities to encourage socialisation and interaction skills.
Whilst on all my school placements I have used technology such as cameras and interactive whiteboards/plasma, I can confidently use board maker to create symbols and use switch programmes.
Working at Hollybank and visiting other special schools in West Yorkshire I have been lucky enough to plan and accompany children on educational trips and extra curricular activities to build on physical and communication skills such as horse riding, hydro, rebound, visits to religious places such as the Sikh temple. The difference in the children I have worked with has been immense and I have had the pleasure to see them progress and blossom.
Routine and structure can be an important part of the day but changes occur which are
inevitable, which can be extremely distressful for children with SEN/autism
I am very used to dealing with change but also managing to keep a calm environment for the children and try to maintain some aspect of their routine intact. I find it paramount to know the children I am working with and their triggers to avoid any upset or crisis but to also understand their full potential.
I have high behaviour management standards and I also like to use a reward scheme such as star of the week which gives the children the praise and confidence to continue excellent work and behaviour. Praise and pace are extremely important when teaching children with SEN, PMLD and MSI, by keeping the lesson simple and at a steady pace with lots of repetition enables the children to be fully engaged and grasp the key information.
I am very used to creating my own sensory stories and songs to keep the children stimulated and I also use objects of reference. Choosing to do English as my subject specialism I have been able to plan creative and exciting lessons and also focus on different forms of communication.
I am really passionate about teaching and believe every child can learn and has the capacity to do so regardless of disabilities. I look forward to enhancing the learning experience for many children and making a positive difference.
I currently have an enhanced DBS in place by my (current employer).
